Ditto on last comment. Short shoe to the front & long shoe to the rear....Adjustment is critical. May have to take several test drives to get them right....
fts?? i will take the drums off today and check the placement of the shoes....one thing is though.... everything was working fine...and then all of a sudden the right rear wheel just started to lock up when i touch the brakes....if i pump the brakes it locks, releases, locks releases....and just the pass side wheel locks up.... when i bled the brakes....cystal clear fluid shot out from each bleeder.... SHOT out...so i dont think there is a blockage..... but it could be the brake shoes...so i will check those... thanks for the ideas...i will keep you up to date
you mean fronts?.....if so....the car nose dives quit well... just the right rear tire locks up.. today i will remove the drums and check the shoes,...maybe i got them backwards...but they worked fine up till they started locking up.... i may just take it to brake masters....free brake check....LOL>...
ok i just took the drums off....and on both sides i have smaller shoes in the front... so i guess they are wrong? according to what you have all said... i need to take the shoes off and put the smaller shoes in front and the larger shoes in the rear of the drums...correct?? thanks
well i took the shoes off....flopped them around so that the small is on the front side of the drum....and it is still locking up.... i am taking it to brake masters tomorrow and have them do a free diagnostic and free estimate.... then i will know exactly whats wrong with it
brakes have you cked the parking brake cable to make sure it's returning if one side is hanging up it will change the shoe to drum clearance
the parking brake is still disconnected after i welded the floor....because the pivot point had to be removed and i need to jack the car up and get the welder back in order to weld the pivot point back in roughly the same location.... so the parking brakes are not even connected...i did however, connect them back up inside the drum... unless i got them backwards as well... someone take a pic for me of the inside of a drum...that way i can see a correctly working drum brake setup
you get a gold star..... took the car to Brake Masters....they said the only thing wrong is the drum is egg shaped...by .015... they said i just need to get the drum turned and it will take car of the problem and to get my brakes adjusted...they said they can do it all for $30 and then i wont have to worry about the adjustment.... i also love not having an interior.....it is a lot faster...cant wait to take it to the drag strip in 3 weeks... thanks for all the ideas everyone
I had similar trouble with a GM truck. Turned out the hose to the wheel cyl. was bad. A flap of rubber would come down restricting the return flow of fluid when the brake pedal was released causing it to temp. lock up Just my 2 cents worth.
solid steel lines coming from the distribution block to the wheel cylinders....... i thought it might have been the rubber hose at the rear axle, but i get good clear brake fluid at good pressure when i bleed the brakes... i am going to get the drum machined this friday and test drive it on saturday
YAY! brakes are good well i got the drum turned today and it stops great...no more locking up... tomorrow i take the mav to a hotrod shop and have them finish welding the sub frames to the new mustang floors... should have it done in 24 hours...... YAY! then i can start driving it again i miss it.... :bananaman
