That's right, just do the stage 4. You won't mess anything up, just take your time and make sure everything is as clean as an operating room. You wont' mess anything up that can't be fixed easily. I prefer these mods over the shift kits.
I will try that stage 4 mod this weekend, if I can find some free time. It seems like i have seen the instructions for B&M or another kit and they require that you do some drilling and replacing springs and balls, etc. So I guess I can do it for free and do the same work?
I am going to do the "free" shift kit this weekend, as recommended by CometGT1974. What I need to know is 1) do I do BOTH the stage 4 fix AND the mods on the first page (grinding the 3 grooves, etc.) or just do the stage 4? 2) Would an extra deep tranny pan be beneficial? and 3) where do I get one (deep pan)? Can I ask for a pan from a different model of car or do I have to special order a deep dish C4 pan? also 4) any suggestions on a drain plug setup?
I would just do the stage 4 and not the grinding of 3 grooves or the other mods, but I'd also like to see what others think. A deep pan keeps the fluids cooler cause you can have more fluid and the fins help too. I think most are aftermarket but not sure. They are also good because they have a drain plug installed already and the plug is usually magnetized. But if you're not installing a higher stall converter, you probably won't have overheating fluid issues and probably don't really need a deep pan. Steel pans are on ebay for $20, but I like aluminum because they seal much better and dissipate heat better. Steel leaks easy if you tighten the bolts too tight, but if you do it right they're fine.
Last time I drained and refilled, with new filter, I think I tightened the bolts correctly, but when I later found a leak (which ended up being from the shift lever) I tighted the bolts more and got them leaking as well. What is the ft/lbs for torquing the pan bolts, and do you recommend gasket and sealer, or just sealant when putting the pan back on. If gasket, cork or rubber (I think the last one was rubber)?
