one more question. on my jeep liberty (06) i can lock out over drive and keep it as a 3 speed for hilly conditions. does the AOD have a lock out feature? or do i need to get a 4 speed type automatic shifter or a button of some kind ty? can i keep it as a 3 speed until i need that extra 4th gear for cruising? this might answer my question as to whether to go AOD or keep the regular C4 and just re-gear the rear.
I use a stock floor shifter. The AOD is kind of strange in there is no lock out for AOD. The AODE does but I am not sure if that transmission will fit in a Maverick. I have seen some post which say you can lock it out by putting it in second gear or buy a modified vavle body. I never tried because I want it to go into OD. Just like any other transmission, if properly adjusted it will downshift when it senses the need. Micah
The factory AOD quadrant is P-R-N-O/D-D-L, pulling it to D locks out the O/D(recommended in hills/mountains), but there's no way to hold 2nd unless one does the AOD shuffle(pull back to 1st when it shifts to 2nd)... The modified Lentech valve bodies have a electric lock out that basically mimics AODE/4R70W operation.. If performed too quickly the AOD shuffle is said to briefly apply the reverse band, but if there is a couple second pause between it shifting to 2nd and the pull back to 1st, supposedly there is no harm done... I ran a stock AOD with a Trans-Go shift kit when the 5.0 was in the Bird, has something like 700 drag passes, still shifts OK though I now wouldn't want to beat it too badly... I have a fresh AOD with Lentech V/B going in my Bird. .
I had an AOD w/trans brake, reverse lock out and OD lockout. Collin has it in his 73 Mav now...that's his car on page 89 of Melvins catalog...
Comet, Thanks for correcting me. I didnt think the OD was locaked out. I will have to try this. Micah
I was scrubbing away underneath my car today when I remembered this: You will need new cooler lines. What worked for me was to get an AOD set from the junkyard V8 car. I cut them at a straight section just before the motor mount. Put a flare on it, get a union and cut the front section of the originals to match. Micah
Another great source for AOD transmissions and valve bodies is Silver Fox. http://www.silverfoxtrans.com/silverfoxtrans.com/Home.html
