Yeah the factory did so in the '70s trying to come up with a A/F ratio that would pass emissions... What they did was lean out the carbs till they would barely run even with heated air supplied to the carb, with a open element air cleaner or none at all they were so lean that many ran in a continuous bog...

Still even one of these carbs would usually start and idle OK(OP make note), was the drivability that took a nose dive without a air cleaner and often if it was just missing hot air inlet hose... With a carb jetted for a proper A/F ratio, the air cleaner can be tossed in the trash and if anything, it'll run better...

    You're over thinking this...

lol.. you're asking the wrong guy a question like that! I drive race cars on the street whenever my wife isn't looking. And I also go ride in other race cars when she's out of town too. Some guys cheat.. but I prefer to race after dark. :D

I obviously get the point though.. so.. no I wouldn't for the sake of engine longevity. Has absolutely nothing to do with changing atmospheric pressure that my carb sees though.

I was actually trying to under think this.

I guarantee you I am the same about some things. Cars aren't my serious obsession. My serious obsession revolves around computers, overclocking everything with a computer in it, and designing custom enclosures for overclocked systems so they don't burn up. Which involves among many things, learning to create different atmospheric conditions inside an enclosed space.

I bet this guy's dad, friends, uncle, whoever, pointed at the carb with an air cleaner on top, and told him all of his life "that is the carb".

So now he finds the air cleaner in his trunk, and thinks he is looking at the carb.

Before we tear him a new one, ask him for clarification.

Hey original poster guy...what does that thing that you think is the carb look like?

We can help you out from there.

I just love all these "bleeding hearts" here. The guy's question was answered in the second post (the one right after his). He did not accept the answer (post #6).

If people want to learn, they must listen to those who are knowledgeable and experienced, otherwise they get what they get.

Seems you're the second clueless one posting here. I have NEVER seen an engine that would fail to run with the air cleaner removed. That includes my 96 E150 van that's got a mass air EFI system. It'll run without the air cleaner AND the mass air meter missing.

Wow! I too realize why I haven't been spending much time here the last few months. This use to be such a friendly place. :(

When I first opened this thread early this morning I immediately thought troll but after reading the OP's other questions about his car I now realize he is here simply looking for help. Now I feel bad for my smartass reply (deleted) and just want to say to the OP...

Chenny - Sorry for that. Sometimes I have to remind myself about "if you don't have anything nice to say"... We were all novices at first and I encourage you to keep asking questions. Perhaps if you could include pictures with your posts it would help us to understand.

this is not his only problem...seems that the answers to his questions are over his head. someone suggested he take a mechanics course...I agree.
