on my fuel cell i had a problem with slosh on stops out of the vent. in the pic below is what i did to fix it. my vent is the aluminum tube coming out of the rt. side of the cell. the first one i did only went up about 3" with being bent right out of the cell. there in the pic it goes up to the top of the trunk. that did keep it from sloshing out. i always had planed on putting one of those k&n filters on but never did. i never had any dirt visible in the cell or prefilter.

Thanks. I think I may need to go a little higher with mine too.

I'm using a 3/8" clear fuel filter for my vent filter. I can put a vacuum plug on it when in storage.

I'm tired of looking at these rusty quarters so I'm getting ready to start with the worst area first. More mouse pee damage, but there was a nest in the bottom of this quarter and the bottom of the drop and most all of the bottom underside of the quarter is eat up.

Rather than attempting to form sheet metal in the shape of the bottom of the quarter (where it attaches to the drop), I am going to start with a 69-70 Mustang quarter patch and go from there. It will require moding of course since a Mustang and Maverick have different shaped wheel openings, but since a patch is $24, it seems like a good place to start rather than a piece of flat sheet metal.

I wish you good luck. I looked into using that piece....and it was just to far off in my opinion to work. I think you would be better off starting out with a flat piece of metal. Also.....3PG is supposed to be getting close on getting the repair panels done for a Maverick. Might want to wait for that (I have no idea how long that would be).

Craig I recently emailed them and they basically told me there wasn't enough interest in them to start production at this time, but they will come one day. They said they would welcome input from the Maverick/Comet community. They also said the quarter patches would be out by now last year when they announced the floor drops...so I give up on them. I'm not waiting forever.

As far as the patch, I'm really only wanting the contoured section on the underside. The rest I will fab. For the price it's worth a shot. No big loss if it don't work.

Not enough interest in them to start production. On the lower Quarter Panel?? Are you kidding me!!! Like there was ANY interest in front frame rails???? Uhhhhggg!!! Never mind.....back on topic.

If you want the lower section of the outside wheel house (inside the rear quarter behind the rear tire)....use the Mustang piece. I used them on my orange car and they fit very well. As far as the outside quarter panel...I think you can fab something that will be closer in shape than the Mustang quarter you had pictured.

Thanks I know it's been a boring project so far but I'm about ready to start on paint and body. It should get more interesting very soon.

Just a silly question: Why would that be any different from a vented cap like all old cars had before EPA made them vent to a charcoal canister?
Maybe you could get one of those one way valves to let air in, but keep fumes from going out.

I guess the fumes are worse with a fuel cell because the vents are typically 3/8" or larger just dumping under the car. With a metal tank venting is not as critical....no issues with collapse. With a polyethylene cell, venting is critical for fuel flow and the possibilty of the tank sucking in.

I ran mine out of the top of the cell (via an AN to 3/8" tubing adapter) and up as high as I could, then bent the tubing and ran it thru a rubber grommet in the floor. I'm sure it will vent great, but I have a fear I may get some leakage from sloshing when driving. That is why a one way valve wouldn't work. It would hold gas in the line with nowhere to go. A rollover valve is suggested but I didn't use one.

I did read good and bad about vents that have loops in them. They can hold fuel in the vent so I opted for a straight vent.

Well, yeah, I can see the difference in a 1/16" pinhole and a 3/8" hole. Depending on the fuel consumption of the engine, I don't really see where a 3/8" vent would be required unless you were really pulling fuel to the carb, like on a big block or high horsepower engine. Just offering up a suggestion.....

Yeah I don't think a vent that large is required, just in my case it was easier because otherwise I'd had a ton of reducers and adapters (and they ain't cheap). Getting from 8AN to 3/8" tubing is fairly easy.

This project as a whole is a bit#h in a way because of the year model. Parts are hard enough to find for a Maverick, much less a 70 Maverick. Some things I'm doing are going to be trial and error I'm sure. This fuel cell idea should work, but I'll have to drive the car some to see if I have any problems like leaks from the vent or sloshing noise.

Another experiment is the use 69-70 Mustang quarter patches. I got the lt side in the mail today. Of course it will need some hammer and dollying, but I'm happy with it as a starting point. I'll make a floor drop myself since it's a simple piece.
