So here is something new that happened after I installed my electric radiator fan. When the AC is on and headlights are on sometimes I press the highbeam switch and car shuts off. That can also happen when I have headlights on and I turn on the AC. It doesn't happen every time. Usually happens when I have the AC and headlight on at the same time. Even if I pull the lever for the AC control knob down further for more airflow it sometimes shuts off (even though AC already is blowing).

Does it do this only at an idle or going down the road?

Are you running the stock 65 amp alternator??? If so...it isnt keeping up.Voltage to ignition drops off due to demand and...cough...the car quits running.

You know what, if it wasnt for your car having one issue after another we wouldnt have anything to read about on this forum :) Well at least we get to learn about problems and cures this way.

Sounds like your voltage is getting low enough it wont send any fire to coil, possible bad ground or bad wire someplace

Oh yea, forgot to mention. Only at idle or sometimes coming to a light.

and yes, we are all very fortunate that my car has a new disease once a week or so. Who wants a reliable car that functions well all the time?? :)
It's much more fun this way and I'm learning more. So the alternator is stock, maybe that's it. I suppose a ground could have gotten messed up. Maybe I'll do the alternator voltage test and see how much it's putting out.

No problem, more work for me and Bryant!

Sounds like it isnt putting enough out at low rpms, how old is your battery?

Dont feel bad my car quit yesterday. Good thing it was in the driveway.

That little alt. wont keep up with much draw at idle. Time for an upgrade.

I would say the engine is idling too low. When the lights put a load on the alternator and then the AC comes on or vise-versa, and the engine is idling too low with out a Dash-pot it shuts the engine down.
Turn the curb-idle screw in a 1/4 turn and see how it does or turn the dash-pot screw in a touch if it is there.

This forum ROX, technology :hmmm: not so sure. Spent 6 hours Fri chasing a LIN bus problem on a 08 Minivan. Turned out to be a corroded connector at the tire pressure trigger module. Some days I hate technology. No such thing as a 6 hour diagnosis on the old Mav. 6 hours on the Mav is a drivetrain swap. I love these old cars. They should crush some of these new vehicles along with the engineers and put our old clunkers back into production.:):)

you know I've been wondering about that. I don't have a tach on there yet so I don't know what it's idling at. I'll check it out.

do you have the...A/C fast idle pod...on your carb????
here is a pic. of mine...it kicks the idle up about 200 RPMs when you turn the A/C on. it's wired through the compressor wire.(y)
