I would say just about every performance Mustang will have a 9 inch under it. But you never know. To help narrow it down, if you look at the door tag if the axle code is a letter this usually indicates it came with a trak-lok or equa-lok. But there is a chance any of them were swapped in their life. Make sure you know what an 8 inch looks like to save yourself time crawling under every car. Fox Body cars will have a 7.5 or 8.8 under it.

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
Were not being pessimistic, just realistic. Go to any other forum and they'll tell you the same. If he has all those mustangs i would try and get a 65-66 9" instead!

Good info for the door tag ID. Crawling under the cars was how I cut myself twice. They're kinda low to the ground with no air in the tires. Or wheels on the axles.

In regard to the 9-inch: I really want to save weight wherever I can and I'm just under/right at the torque/horespower threshold where the 8-inch durability factor gets dicey. Thought I'd give it a whirl and see what happens. If I didn't keep breaking stuff, I'd have no excuse for improving my car. :)

Another to look under is any Granada/Monarch 74-80. Especially the 80 models, these were the last Ford/Merc cars with leaf sprung 8 & 9" rears. I've seen two 80 models, both had 9" drum brake rears. One of the Versailles rears I had came from under a Monarch with 2L50 tag. I never pass the chance to look under any of these cars for a 9

Only thing is after 40 years, the Door tag is unreliable as to what rearend MIGHT under any car. Only way to know for sure is to look at the rearend itself. ;)

Good point; and with all the advances in plastic surgery and implants, nowadays, this advice also applies to fishin' for dates at the bar. :D

I thought that too, about 'letters are lockers' until you get to the stang II, I, rather my son just called me last week with a 74 (no V8's in 74) mustang II complete in a pull a part, axle code 'G', 3.55 conventional...disappointed was an understatement. But do you expect from a 2.8 V6...

Indeed, the 65-66 9's are fine for our narrow rear cars!

You can't depend on a tag on the center chunk either. though it is more likely to be right than a door tag. Only way to be sure in your instance is to pull it and count the teeth and check for the shoulders around the ring gear bolts.
