Seat Backs... Might try looking at MP Products for the seat backs. I believe all Mustang supply places get their seat backs from them? At least they are a little cheaper than the link you provided. Hope this helps you. http://www.mpproductsstore.com/seat-backs.html
Thanks for the info. I saw them but I did a big order with Mustangs Unlimited and it was cheeper to include the backs in with the rest of the order.
Jeff, Thanks for checking. I think you have confirmed what I suspect. While the seats might look like a Mustang, Mercury must have done something different to them or would not have gone through the trouble of giving them a different part number. My understanding of the Ford part system is that the same type of part will carry the same root part number while the prefix will designate its model/year and the postfix will designate any small changes such as color. If I had a Mercury parts book I could compare it to a Ford, but I don’t have one. As far as bending the supports, I spoke with my upholsterer and he does not think that is the problem. My previous posts with the photos shows the original foam as 2 ½” wider where it fits into the frame than the replacement. It is just not possible that the frame is bent. The new foam cannot be stretched to fit the frame. He has been doing this longer than I have been alive and has had cars on Pebble Beach. So, I have to take his word for it. He is just going to slice them. I’m confident he is going to make it work and they will turn out nice. He is even going to customize the rears to make them have a matching bolster and sew it all up with a thick red stitch. Its going to be nice. It was just driving me nuts as to why the foam did not directly fit. Time to move on to other issues, like who makes a good set of carpet!
Hope you don't mind me throwing my own question in your thread! I have a pair of 70-71 torino high back bucket seats. I've been told that they are the same as 71-73 seats. Two good things could common this if they're the same. 1.) I could have some nice bucket seats. 2.) there are more seat cover design patterns to choose from in the Torino catalogs and they actually match maverick (back) seats better than the mustang designs.
John, I'm not quite sure what your question is. I looked at my parts book. The cushion for a '71 Torino is not the same as a '71 Mustang or Maverick. I did not look, but I bet the seat tracks are not the same as a Maverick. Micah
DUH! You're right Micah, I didn't make my question clear. I wanted to see if anyone could verify the mustang seats and Torino seats were the same. The tracks are definitely different from the maverick. Spacing is way off. Thanks! Either way, I like these seats and if they're torino that's ok because I can get foam and seat covers for them.
I was asked to report back on how my Sport RII seats came out. Well, they looked great and are extremely comfortable. http://mmb.maverick.to/media/tmi-sport-ii-seat-foam.19713/ Unfortunately, they don’t fit. We had an issue with the bottoms of the original seats being wider than the replacement foam. So we sliced the foam and added more to make it fit. I never really found out why my seats were wider than their foam. You can see pictures in a previous post. I assumed that my seats were stock ’71-’72 Comet. My car was disassembled and the upholster was 200 mile away. So, I really could not check on things. The foam was sent directly to him and the bucket seats were never in the car originally. Yesterday, I finally got to the point to install them and, to my shock, found out that they were so wide that the seat touched the door latch. Also, they were so tall that my head hit the headliner. Now what to do? I’m considering trying to order the Sport I seat foam bottoms and see if I can use the tops that I already had made. I’m just concerned about them not fitting the frames. Has anyone used the Sport I Seat foam on Comet seats? I do not understand how TMI can sell foam that makes the seat drastically higher. What am I missing here? Do I have some oddball seats? I pulled them out of the Comet myself. http://www.tmiproducts.com/mustang/browse-by-category/foam.html?find=1971-mustang-coupe-288 Micah
Wow Micah, Really sorry to hear you are still struggling with this. For reference, my seat bottoms are right at 22 inches wide. I am using LDO seat tracks, and they put the seats very close to the floor. I did that for leg room under the steering wheel, but I have plenty of head room as a result too. I am 6'0", and this all fits well now. Another thing that may help is that the LDO tracks are directly in line with the original holes for the bench seat. I believe that when these cars were produced, those holes were a given, regardless of what seating was going into it, and then the inboard holes were added for bucket seat cars. If you are using the highback seat tracks, not only are they taller, but they jog to the outboard side, probably an inch. As a result, my seats are close to the Versailles console that I have in there, and have 2.5 inches of room outboard, between the seat and the door. You mentioned the seat bottom hitting the door latch .... are you using later doors?
Captain, They are high backs with original tracks. Doors are '71. The seats are just that wide. The added bolster really brought them out. When I picked them up from the upholster, I was a bit shocked to see how wide they are. You mentioned a while back that you had some '71-'72 Mustang seat cushions. Do you still have them. I'm trying to resolve why I had a width issue to begin with and have nothing to compare them to. Thanks, Micah
Micah, I sold the seat cushions that I had, but do have the proper frames installed in my car. I am surprised that you say they are touching the door latch (handle?). My seats are not high enough to ever contact the armrests. Look at the bolts in your seat tracks going into the floor vs how the seats bolt to them. LDO tracks might be able to correct this problem.... lower the seat and move it inboard a touch. You weren't considering a console were you? If the seats are stuffed that wide, I doubt that would work.
Captain, My issue is solely with the foam. The '72 Comet seats that I put in should fit. I tried to do something custom by ordering the Sport II foam and then modifying it. That foam just came on the market when I ordered it and there may have been issues wiith it to begin with. I'm afraid that these seats need to be torn apart and redone with less aggressive foam. I just need to make sure I get the right ones this time. The old foam has now been thrown out along with the original upholstery which I could really use now as a pattern. Hopefully, I can salvage the leather and not have to buy another hide.
Micah, I get that. Do you know that LDO tracks are essentially flat? No riser to them. You might be able to use the seats as-is. LDO tracks are the black ones, Grabber ones are on the right.
Jeff, I appreciate the photos. It might bring the seat down a bit but I still have an issue with the width. The cushion has to go. I'm talking with TMI to see if I can just buy the Sport I cushion and attempt to keep the Sport II top. Micah
[ Well, I got nowhere with TMI. I had hoped to just get a cushion from them and avoid having to pay for the back too. If I want it, I have to buy the whole thing and I could not get a deal out of them. Does anyone happen to have an old seat cushion (bottom) foam they would part with? I just need something to compare with since my originals have been thrown out. Thanks, Micah
Micah, I have a set of '71-73 Mustang high back bucket seats in the shop. Is there anything I can measure off of them to help? I also have a complete new foam set for the seats I can take measurements of if you need it. Old passenger side cushion is pretty nice, but the driver's side has seen better days. I will be heading over there tomorrow. Here they are in the car with Mav/Comet high back seat tracks. Let me know if I can help.
