Another view. I've looked through dozens of pictures of the car to find you a better shot. If it ever stops raining, I'll be able to get to the car and see it in person again. (6.75 inches today since 6 AM)
very common spot for rust, mine are toast too, and I am from cali. Look into what was the trunk with a flashlite, and look at that corner from the inside. You should be able to tell if it has rusted through yet, or is about to.

"RUST FREE" See...there is no such thing as a "rust free" Maverick! You don't even need salted roads to rust them. Virtually every Maverick I've seen has a hint of rust in those areas. (That's why I sacrificed the quarters and saved the taillight panel).
