Hey John, fast or slow...drop it down to the 5 o'clock and see if the weigh distribution helps your launch...
Art, I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve? Are you wanting the correct gas cap for a stallion? I don't see a picture of the one you are talkin about. I think you are talkin about the one with the steer head that is the thicker one that is 1-1/4" thick and is chrome. That I believe is the older deluxe cap until about 72 I think.(anyone?) The other one with the steer head is only 3/4" thick and is a brushed stainless. That is also a deluxe cap that took over after the other I believe.(anyone?) And then the other was also 3/4" thick that is also a brushed stainless with just the word Maverick on it. I don't believe there is and have never seen one with the steerhead and the word Maverick on it.(Craig? anyone?) And the correct one for the stallion is the one that is 3/4" thick and brushed stainless with the steerhead on it. It is part of the stallion package as the deluxe cap. You can see it on the back of the stallion in the 76 brochure.
I don't know a whole lot about which gas caps are correct...but I can add that the really thick deluxe gas cap was used at least up to 1974 because it was part of the LDO package in 1974. I would say the early deluxe gas cap....especially with the retaining wire.....is the most popular gas cap that people want.
I would agree with you on that Craig. Did that cap always come with the attachment wire or sometimes without it?
Here are photos of the two deluxe gas caps that "I" know of (and mind you, I'm no expert). The first one is what I remember being on my original '76 Stallion. It had the logo and the word "Maverick". The second one (I believe) was on the earlier Mavericks. It only had the logo. My buddy got me the first one, which does not have the wording, but besides that, it appears the same. My original Stallion deluxe gas cap did not have the retaining cable on the cap.
If you show a picture of the back ... I believe they are different also. The early have a single row of flanges to hold it on ... the later model cars have a double row ...
Ok, now you guys are scaring me...I hope your not telling me that the cap won't fit my filler neck? And vented, I'm not sure about that. I have not tried it yet, but I thought that would be the same. I just might have a NOS deluxe gas cap for sale if it won't fit my '76...
They all fit, no worries there. As far as the vented and non vented, in a closed system (carbon canister) the vent will not open in the cap anyway. But if you have done the Mustang tank swap and didn't add in the line for your carbon canister, a vented cap is needed. Here is a pic - 4 ears, 2 ears and 2 are vented one is not.
Well, like I said. I didn't think there was and have never seen one that was the thicker one with the steerhead and the word Maverick. I stand corrected on that one. Thanks for SHOwing me that one art. Nice cap by the way! Your saying your buddy got you the one with the steerhead only? I take it you got the pics from ebay? The original Stallion you spoke of. Was you the original owner from new? Like I said, it does not SHOw these on the Stallion in the 76 brochure. But that does not say that pic is correct. I'm sure the picture was taken in 75 sometime. Maybe they then by the time the actual car was released, it had the cap that you are SHOwing. I would say either cap on a Stallion may be correct. It would be nice if there was a original owner of one that took pics back in the day when they brought there pride and joy Stallion home. I do have one like you SHOw with the steerhead only, no wire and is vented, but the chrome is not the best.
