I have a small diamond-shaped aluminum tag on my oldest set of keys. Thre is "MEXICO RECORD NUMBER AND DESTROY TAG" stamped into it. Followed by a 6 digit code 2 letters and 4 numbers.

What is the purpose of this tag?

It's the code for the cut of the keys for your car. When it was new, they came like that, so if you lost your keys, the dealer could cut new ones from the code.

That tag came with the lock set I bought from AK as well.

Do you think this code still works? Can I call the ford dealer and give him the number and get another set of "original" keys?

Car was originally purchased in 1973...

If code no longer works, I may just keep in on the keychain for something original. I am guessing not many people still have the tag?

Actually, it may be an aftermarket tag, my keys have a round thing..

Sounds like aftermarket, my new keys had the same thing.
And my (aftermarket)locks were made in mexico.

I would also guess aftermarket because:

    1. Originals had round tags as was mentioned

    2. The MEXICO thing is throwing me off as well.

Ford key numbers are FA**** for the ignition and FB**** for the trunk. Those numbers cross reference to the actual cut numbers. Any locksmith has access to them, as well as the dealers.
