I have an update on the 85 lincoln 302...
It had a fatal flaw of a broken off water pump bolt.
Someone broke off 2 drill bits on each side of the bolt.

I didn't know until I took off the timing cover, broke flush.
As I was taking a week to patiently drill out the problem area.
When I was tapping for a helicoil, is when it happened...
The entire side of the water jacket next to the bolt hole, broke out.

Long story short, I angrily put the motor on a Jenny Craig Diet.
Stripped it down from 460lbs to 130lbs, now just a bare block.

Good news is, my buddy is selling me a complete 306 tricked out.
I estimate 330hp to 345hp, will be taking pics eventually.

I consider this experience as an expensive lesson to thoroughly inspect purchases.
In the particular case here, it was about a $600 lesson.

While broken bolts are fairly common, can't say I've seen a block have a chunk fall out of it unless it'd been frozen...

I think it may have been galvanic corrosion from dissimilar metals (drill bits) in an iron block.
Using the antifreeze as an electrolyte, the drill bits corroded the iron around the area.
Which explains why the block spit out iron granules(sand), instead of metal shavings.

    RunFree1_70,

Welcome to the Maverick world...I know everybody has their own vision, good lord I have mine. :2cents: If I were to do it all over again, crate engine. I guess it all depends on how deep your pockets are.

I too am in the process of installing a V8 (1981 Lincoln Continental), I ended up finding a cheap 74 Maverick donor car which helped out tremendously. I used/took everything off of the 74 I could.

Best of luck on your build.

The 70 grabbers had them, we parted out a 70 grabber and it had it.

Other than 1st year 1968, Boss 302 & '83-'85 Stangs, there was never another 4bbl 302/5.0 from factory...

I bought it as a long block, no intake or carb. I put a edelbrock performer intake and a 500cfm carb on it.

If all goes well this week, I will have my 306 by Friday.
A motor far more photogenic for future posts:burnout:

Here is the 306, swapped the offenhauser that was on it for an edelbrock.
