Sorry to hear about the crank! Hope you get it back together with no problem! Broken cranks can do strange things- They can totally grenade an engine.....but I have seen 18 wheeler engines keep running with a broken crank.....not running GOOD mind you....but running none the less......Kind'uv a freak thing. Anyway, again- I hope you get the Plum all healed up!! Good Luck and Take Care!! Preston

Extremely lucky would be an understatement...the instant I hit the traps the motor reved way up and lost all power to the wheels...I shut it down qwik...got out of the car expecting to see stuff laying on the track...nothing there. Actually went a 5.58 that pass then boom:(
Dave I run gas...Seth I have a family reunion in Tennessee that week..actually I'll only be in Ky. for Thurs. and Fri. then off to Pigeon Forge for a week.
There's nothing I want more than to be in Ky. with the car but on the other hand I'm not just gonna throw something together...my builder knows it's important to me and will have the short block ready...everything is gonna hinge on the heads...if we can get the flow numbers out of them we need to run mid 5's I'll be there...if not it's time for new heads...Yates, blue thunder or maybe the new Brodix heads....pfffft...somethin that can flow over 400 cfm.
Thanks for the well wishes everyone..(y)

I'm a little late, but, along with everyone else, I'm sorry to hear the news.

But I know you know the saying, "Gentlemen, we can rebuild <it>. We have the technology. We have the capability."

Good luck next time out. Looking forward to hearing new personal bests outta the beast.

I had that exact thing happen this year in a Cat. Drove it for two weeks like that, the only clues were a slight vibratation in the clutch pedal and a strange noise on initial start up and at shut down, sounded like it was in the clutch area. Cat said it was broke on # 1 rod journal, they had a bad run of cranks notorious for doing that. Only way I found out for sure was when the front seal went out, oil everywhere. Took it to the shop to get a seal and found the bad crank. Funny thing was, it ran as good as always, no noise when running. I lost big time on that deal....

By any chance are you guys with the locked up oil pumps running Melling pumps purchased within the past year or so? There's a lot of buzz going on lately about Melling switching to powdered metal rotors in their pumps and not using machined billet steel anymore. Has caused a bunch of failures.

mine was because a small piece of the keeper wire in 1 of 2 lifters i broke about a year ago got sucked up into the pump and seized it. thought i had all of the pieces out. so i guess it was my fault. i think when i put new rings and bearings, oil pump and shaft that i cleaned the block and turned it over a number of times and this small piece eventually freed itself. :)
