I second checking the transmission mount. Mine looked fine but the rubber was compressed and caused its metal shell to hit the crossmember, it caused bad vibrations on take off and at 50mph to 70mph. I got a new tranny mount for like 8 bucks or less.
I keep thinking about when this started - right after he changed rear ends - Not just the third member but the entire differential and housing, Is the differential located in the same position as the old differential? Is one side back further than the other? Is the angle of the pinion the same as it was with the old one? The pinion on a nine inch is higher from the spring perches than the eight inch is from its perches. Was this relocation dealt with? The third member was rebuilt... was this done at a shop? was the crush sleave collapsed at the time of the rebuild? Were the side bearings replaced? Were the pinion bearings replaced? Was the nose bearing replaced? Is there any movement, fore, aft, right or left at the pinion? Are the tires the same size? I can't think of anything else that could go wrong at the rear end.
Hey, what happens if you don't torque down the pinion nut to full torque? will the crush sleeve completely crush? What else could happen...?
Yes the rear was rebuilt at a good shop. the housing came from a 75 maverick. or rather th ewhole rear end did. after looking at it running off the ground I noticed the tire moved up and down alot. Im going to use a dil indicator to see if the axle may be bent. does any one know the specs for run out trueness for the rear axle. I was goimg to put the axle in a lathe at wotk and check it that way? Any ideas? thanks Mark
Uh...I would guess that a bent axle "might" make some driveline noise... Especially if the tire moves up and down "a lot"... If I were you, I would disregard all other comments on this thread until you rule that one out
