Went to install the driveshaft today and it's 1/4" too long to fit, it's 45 3/4" center of cup to center of cup, it almost goes in but just wont, the yolk slides into the tranny all the way till it bottoms out, it's the TREMEC tranny I installed, when putting the motor mounts on it seemed depending of how they are orientated I could gain of lose a half inch as far as how far back the engine sits, could this be the problem? It just seemed to me the motor mounts (rubber part) are not centered on the plates but I don't know for sure, anybody know? and also is a Mustang driveshaft shorter, I did a search on driveshaft lengths and got varied results on Maverick lengths (2 door cars) so that makes me wonder also.

Does the driveshaft bottom out in the tranny or does the output shaft bottom out in the driveshaft? May be able to cut one or the other

It was a toploader 4 speed, before that I don't know

I believe the output shaft bottoms out in the driveshaft yolk.

Get some clay and place a ball on the end of the output shaft and then slide the yolk on. This should confirm where youre bottoming out. Cut as necessary. Not that I have any experience with this

Okay, in this pic you can see what I am talking about on the motor mount, one side is longer and the actual mount is offset around 1" right now to the rear, if I swap sides with the mounts I should gain an inch (move the engine forward) am I correct in my thinking on this? that's would be a easy fix for that but that means a rebuild of my tranny crossmember :yikes: but I built the current one so I can build another crossmember I guess. BTW this is the passenger side mount in the pic.

im pretty sure the motor mounts are the same side to side. the other side should have that offset to the rear of the motor.
are you trying to put the drive shaft in with the rear suspension hanging down or compressed?
if its hanging try doing it with the susspension compressed. that usually moves the diff back from the transmission giving you more room to put the drive shaft in.

Rear suspension is on the ground Bryant, how much "play" should there be between the yolk bottoming out, don't I need some room to allow for movement of the rear suspension?
    Thanks

Do you have the long or short yoke? You need 1" play

my drive shaft shop has put the yoke all the way into the trans then pull it out 3/4" the measure from the ujoint cap center in the yoke to the u joint cap center in the diff with it at ride height. i personally dont like that little bit of travel and will usually do it that way at full droop. that way the drive shaft can be installed at full droop and wont bottom out.

Are you using a stock 8" and pinion yoke?

Not all yokes are splined their full depth, check to be sure... Also could be depth of transmission splines are not as deep... On stock trans doesn't make a difference as output shaft is generally necked down, but may be larger on the Tremec...
