Hello, my Maverick and Comet Cousins! I have a ‘71 Mav, 200 engine. I’m doing a full brake job. Starting with the front right, I see deep grooves in the backing plate’s shoe riser—or whatever it’s called. I’m sure the other three plates are in the same condition after 50 years! Does anyone know where I can get replacement backing plates? Thank you! Everyone be careful out there and stay well!
Hi! I thought about that, but...yes, finances won't allow it at this time. I've also been thinking of putting in three small carbs, to equalize fuel distribution in the engine, but that will have to wait also! Bye, Daniel
Stopping is more important than acceleration. I'm yet to see a mild 6cyl that's happy with multiple carberation. Possibly with progressive linkage setup, but 99% of time you're still running on center carb. If you're not going upgrade to discs, I'd look at possibly having a machine shop weld the area and cut it to correct height. With good welding skills could fix it yourself and file it.
Putting multiple carbs on stock engine will do nothing for performance n will cause grief trying to get it setup properly if you don’t know what ur doing.
It's not the years that wear the backing plates but rather the miles. If money is an issue; I would inspect the other three backing plates for wear before attempting to purchase all four. Also upon replacing the brake shoes a dab of grease on each backing plate pad will prevent this type of wear in the future. It goes without saying; keep the grease off the new shoes. I would suggest searching for used backing plates. Member Craig Selvey is a possible source: Craig@MaverickCorral.com
