I just caught this in you post, you can install the T5 and use your bellhousing, clutch/flywheel and Z linkage by purchasing a adapter plate like this.

Scott Drake also makes a T5 clutch fork conversion fulcrum so you can use the T5 bellhousing and your clutch/flywheel and Z linkage.

But first we need to figure out what’s up with you input shaft,

That seems odd, it’s definitely cut. Let’s go about this another way remove the shift cover and count the teeth on the input shaft.

Agreed, I've never seen any T5 that input shaft bearing surface was as short. Apparently cut.

My confusion was because it closely resembles a big block toploader input.

You should confirm it's internal condition.. I busted the cluster in my '86 5.0 Stang T5, (ID 169) when I short shifted 2nd to 3rd. The 199 is touted as having a stronger gear set than earlier transmissions.

Also check the diameter of the input shaft pilot bearing surface 0.668 or 0.590?
If you don’t have a micrometer will a 5/8 wrench fit on it?

This is the correct diameter for V8 input.

View attachment 123959 here 23 teeth”
This is a common gear ratio for V8 trans.

Yes, that is used but not the end of the world & should be ok to run.

The bad news is whoever sold you the trans screwed you and you will have to change the input. But a input is not to expensive if you can manage it yourself.
Check out YouTube for some T5 repair videos.

    You’re welcome

Here’s a link for a input, if you look around you may find one cheeper.

Where are you located? there maybe a member close by that can help you with installing the new input, or recommend a shop.

If still has tag you can determine genre or 'count gear teeth' literally for replacement, looks like usable core for rebuild. Most @ 85-93 T5's are similar except for gear count but 'Cobra - Z Rated' have 'pocket cone bearing' instead of roller bearing joining Inp/Outp shaft.

    have fun

Seeing that someone has cut the nose off the input (and who knows what else) I would not rely solely on the tag information of a 29 year old transmission for identification.

If one is a archaeologist they'll look at witness marks on said tag bolt hole, top cover etc. IF there is only one set of marks it can be fairly safe to assume transmission has never been disassembled.

You are correct, but I don’t have my hands on the trans and even if I did I assume nothing and trust no one.
