So I eventually want my automatic 73 comet converted to manual. What's a good engine and transmission combo to do that with. I want it to be a five speed and want it to sound mean but not overbearing. Any ideas on sites and prices for these and additional parts ? Thanks
The questions your asking are impossible to give ideas and prices w/o knowing a lot more than you have stated in the previous post. What it comes down to; what mechanical/fabrication skills you possess; whether you plan on buying mostly new parts, what is meant by overbearing, etc., etc, etc. Welcome to the forum from Northeastern Illinois....
Thank you. I'm not mechanically inclined to swap parts like those out, just want it to be a manual transmission and an engine with some umph to it, want it to have a deep rumbling sound as well, newb on these cars and parts, and yes, new parts for the most part, thanks for the reply.
These aren't toys for the mechanically challenged. From Summit catalogue. Blue Print 302 dressed long block with roller cam $4435, T-5 trans, $1995, flywheel, $140, bellhousing, $232, clutch $189 = $6991 and this is just getting started. With cooling system, pulleys & brackets for front of engine, clutch pedal, linkage, full exhaust system, motor mounts, trans crossmember etc, etc add another $2500+. Labor probably $2500-$3500.
The T5 in the higher rated WC builds are great behind a 302, but it does take more than average skills to get them set up properly and fit correctly to the Maverick frame. The Ford toploader 4 speed is almost a bolt in tranny and can be swapped quite easy. It fits just like the factory 3 speed that came in these cars. Drawback to the 4 speed is lack of the T5's overdrive which is nice if you have swapped out the rear gears.
Prior to taking on any major powertrain swaps, you might tell us what condition is your Comet? Any rust or body issues? Post a few pictures.
Thank you, yes I was expecting to be pricey like this, since I may need these parts one at a time what can I replace and still be able to drive it?
The only little bit of rust I've noticed was on the trunk area bout a nail head size, body is straight, I'll be able to post a few picks this weekend
Other than maybe radiator, virtually zero. To perform a 6cyl to v8 to swap, almost everything from transmission forward must be removed/disassembled, then reassembled with different engine. At one time it was easy, one just buy a parts car with all the items needed. Usually a couple hundred at most.
So Vinchez, what engine is in yours? If it is the 250 you might want to just run that. They are a stout motor that has much potential and it uses the V8's transmission bellhousings.
To be honest, I really don't know. When I go autozone or advance auto parts people ask me what type I have I just tell them the 200, how can I tell which one I have, would looking up the vin # tell me? Or somewhere on the engine?
