I usually just duct tape a zip lock bag over the tail shaft shaft. Even if you drain the trans, there is still going to be fluid in the torque converter and chances are there will still be some in the tail shaft housing. I do not have a load leveler on my engine hoist, but have pulled and installed several engines and transmissions now without a problem.
Drain everything. There should be a plug in the converter too. You should see it when you are spinning it taking the nuts off. Just be careful with it, the plug is soft and will round easily if you don't use a tight fitting wrench. I have never used a leveler myself. It would probably be great. I take engine and tranny out together with the hood in place. You can put a broomstick or something like it, down on the frame rail by the brake booster and hold the hood up to the max. Once the oil pan is over the rad support, you can usually have a friend grab the tranny tail shaft and lift/rotate it gently over the support. Just make sure you work as a team, one manuvering the tail shaft and one keeping the cherry picker in check, while pulling it away from the car upon the instruction of the tail shaft guy. One guy can do this, but I don't recommend it!
the first time i ever used a leveler was with that nissan engine/trans yesterday and it was awesome. definatly worth the money if you plan on swapping engines around alot
ha, i wish. todays adventures took me to the DMV to get all my car titles out of my recently deceased mother's name into my own. since i was a minor at the time of purchase on all of them technically she bought them all. so if you really want to get technical about it today will be my first day as a maverick owner lol. i'll probably actually take it through inspection Friday morning at 8 when they open and devote the rest of the afternoon to disconnecting everything. saturday my friend is dropping off the hoist and taking me to NJ to get the 302. sunday the 250 should be laying on the ground Wish me luck
Even if you drain the transmission when you tip it up on end there is enough oil in it to make a big mess. This is also a good time to rebuild that C4 and install a TransGo 40-2 shift kit. Are you going to install the 302 as it is or will you be rebuilding/modifying it?
probably not a full rebuild but i will be taking most of it apart just to inspect it and put fresh gaskets in. i'll probably do the oil pump, timing set and maybe a cam while im in there and its also going to get a better intake and 4bbl.
I drain my tranny before removal and put a baggy with duct tape arond the output shaft. AND still place some type of container on the floor. Actually I use an old donut tray from a bakery.
I quit using the duct tape to seal the baggie on the tailshaft. I use zip ties now, come on people, its the 21st century! lol I always pull the engine and trans together. Dan
Any good red neck will tell you that duck taype is far superior to any of them there fancy hi-tech plastic ties.
