Restoring my '72 Comet GT. I have no engine, so I thought it might be a good time for a swap. I want to go to a 351 Windsor, mostly because my brother has one he will sell to me and that would save the time, money, and effort looking. I was just wondering will it fit, how hard it is to drop in if yes, and how difficult is it to work on once it's in there.
My own 351 swap isn't a Windsor but one thing they have in common is width of the engine bay - search this forum for the subject of shaving back the spring tower sides and the rest will be a lot user friendly. I know headers are somewhat an issue at times but a 351W swap is fairly common and there is a lot of info on the site pertaining to it - good luck
If you are wanting to save time and money...find a 302. It can be frustrating to find everything you need to a 351...plus headers can be a nitemare. This swap is not for the novice in my opinion (not sure where your expertise falls).
Heres another 351 in a mav. Yes, spark plug changes can be a pain and headers are definitely a problem (Finding ones that fit well) Summit sells a set that seem to work ok...Cant remember the PN# sorry.
find a 302 they drop right in there a little room to change plugs and np cutting of the shock towers and parts are cheap and just about every parts store will have everything you will need. check your local picknpull theres ALWAYS cars with 302's even newer will work you just have to keep track of the year of the car you pull the motor from when you buy parts for it. if you have a gt it wouldve came with a 302 heres my comet with a 302
I picked up a wrecked 94 Bronco for the 302 that was in it. It had 96k on the engine and I paid nothing for it after selling and scrapping it. When I told my wife I was going to pay $300 for a rolled Bronco she went into orbit! Sh understands my madness now.
