Could a piece of flat bar have been used to connect the pipes together along the system, especially the straight areas, to help keep the tubes from playing their tones? Maybe some stratigically placed hangers?

Interesting thought. I don't know if the pipes are actually vibrating or if its just sound in the pipes with energy-building waves. I suppose the physics is the same as an organ pipe.

That's a good word for it.

This exhaust guy thought the "X" in the exhaust pipes was too constraining. Said he would have used a 3" X-pipe. I picked up the 2.5" X-pipe in Carlisle for $20 in the Pypes scratch & dent pile. Looks about like this one. http://www.pypesexhaust.com/xpipes.html Who knows??? :hmmm:

I keep thinking it's like a tuning fork. If something is touching it and soundly attached it seems it would dampen the resonance. So along the longest straightest stretches might be the place to begin attaching stiffeners/dampers..? Quite possible that exhaust wrap would be ideal, but who wants that along the pipes?.. Then again, maybe it would require something more ridgid at the most oscilating point and the wrap would do nothing.. Hmmm..

Now I wanta listen to my exhaust . I have wraped long tubes and all I recall is hearing a kinda ping sound at idle and a rumble at cruise.. I could be dreaming too :biglaugh:

i have seen on factory exhaust systems a weight attached to the pipes some times. i wonder if this could be to dampen vibrations in the tubes?

The weights are hung at the correct angle and distance from the mounting point on the pipe to offset the frequency that is causing the resulting vibration. Engineers come up with the math for what is exactly correct but Ford has been doing that for years. (hanging weights on exhausts) We had a kit at one time that included a weight, clamp and hardware to reduce the exhaust resonance in the interior of 97, 98 Expeditions with the 5.4l. They had us install the weight and move it around until the resonance was at a tolerable level. I thought it was just a bandaid for a poorly designed exhaust system but only a few vehicles were affected and it was only on the 5.4l. The 4.6l had virtually the same exhaust but was quiet as a mouse.

It really boils down to trial and error.

Yes....the pan was a little dirty. Too many shop rags on the floor jack when I installed it. :p

    Craig,

That is a sharp car. Worth the trip to Indiana just to see your car!

I thought it was a reflection of the shop rags.
