Dan sometimes brake fluid will cause rubber to swell up and distort and you don't want brake fluid to get on any painted surface as it will eat the paint. maybe put a small amount of white lube on the seal or silicone...jm .02$

This thread made me have a look at the screws and they were old and ugly, so mine are now stainless too :29:

    Looks great thanks :drink:

I decided to restore my old floor shift bezel. It polished up real nice...and I repainted the black. I also decided to paint the screw heads black. This picture didn't come out very well.....but it looks pretty darn good and the screw heads just make themselves invisible inside the black paint.

I can tell already that it isn't going to last long. It is to darn thick.

    Craig,

It looks very nice, I don't think you need a new one. Hey, just briefly, is it horribly difficult to convert an automatic on the column to a floor shift style like yours?

difficult is a relative term. some people can weld in whole panels and make it look like factory and think its easy:bowdown: . the stock style floor shifter can be put in without much modding other than cutting the hole for the bottom half to bolt into. the top half rides in that "bucket". if you want to eliminate the shifter assembly off of the column completely, you have to replace the column. but if your good at metal work, you can probably pull the shifter collar off and remove the wheel lock mechanism to make it look stock. if i remember right you may have to change how the shifter on the transmission points to another direction to work with a floor shifter linnkage. if you go aftermarket or with aftermarket parts it may vary some of these mods. good luck(y)

My car was already a factory floor shift.

    Sierra covered it pretty well.

The rubber has to be rigid in order to stay up in a "hoop" type pattern. Origianlly this was done with metal inside the rubber. On the repops....they just use a thicker rubber.

Well, getting the bezel screws out was a real pain. 2 were missing and the other 2 were fused to the aluminum housing. Both of those broke off and once I had
the bezel off I noticed the other 2 had broken off too.... Looks like I will
have to try and drill them out or look for another shifter. This one has the
black bezel anyway...not chrome. And the rubber seal was shot...

It would be the 69-73 style. The 67-68 is smaller.

Craig ... the only picture I could find of the shifter is on the back of the 1971 Sales Brochure ... it does show it with black screw heads ....
