    Good evening all,

Just wanted to post a couple pics of the new 76' purchased in Loveland, CO. Of course, I have a few questions as well.

Not used to the small dia. ground cable, but appears original.

Original carb? was reported to be part of the problem, even after being rebuilt. Recommendations for replacement considering this car will be a DD and want "some" performance?

I assume the belt driven component below the alernator is a part of the "emmisions" system?

    TIA,

    Chris

Welcome to the board! That unit under the alternator is the AIR pump for exhaust emissions.

Welcome to the site from northeast Ohio!!! :tiphat:

You wrote there is a problem that is possibly being caused by the carburetor. What is the problem?

    Hey Hotrock,

The car had been sitting for 10 years, the PO recalls the carb being a problem and never being corrected, even after being rebuilt/adjusted by a mechanic.

My son and I are laying out a plan of action. I expect after cleaning the engine bay (started last night), we will pull the starter to check it's function and inspect the flywheel. The engine moves freely, but I assume most would still recommend some ATF on top of the pistons to help free up any "sticking" rings? We will pull the valve covers as well to do a visual on push-rods before testing compression. Once we trouble shoot any electrical issues with the starter we will pull all the plugs and see what we have. The only gauge I have right now is one of the hand held with the rubber end to seal as held against the spark plug seat, but we'll see how it goes.

I was curious if the stock 2bbl car is worth a basic rebuilt kit? or what do folks here like for a reliable, daily driver carb? Knowing we want some "spunk" down the road, I thought we might be money ahead to find a good carb to start with. I guess at this point, I assume the "rebuilt" carb would need cleaned at a minimum and likely need a new accelerator pump, etc.?

Not a bad idea to do a good cleaning and put a kit in it but if it didn't fix it the first time it might not be a carb issue at all. Sold a bunch of rebuilt carbs when I worked in auto parts and had people claim they were defective when the car still did the very thing they were trying to fix. A compression test will tell you the most, using a good gauge would be best. You can rent one from Autozone or O'Reilly's and get a better reading than that push in style you have.

    :Welcome: from central VA!

A 390 CFM Holley 2 barrel carb would be a good replacement for the original carb. It will help give the car a little more spunk like you are looking for.

    Thanks fellas,

After a little reading, we will likely lean towards the 4-barrel carby.

Always a risk with used, but this appears to be the same or similar unit, not far from home.

PS - For the time being, it looks like we will see how the stock carb works, I saw some reasonable kits on ebay.

Doesn't look like the kick down was hooked back up. You might check or eliminate the EGR valve from the carb base. I'm betting there are some worn out parts in the old emissions gear or vacuum hoses that were causing problems. These old Motorcraft 2 barrels are pretty reliable. - Matt

    Not the same intake.

Notice the used manifold has a far shallower plenum. Appears to not have the throttle linkage mounting bracket holes of the new unit. Also a possibility of hairline cracks with a used unit.

    Thanks,

Plenty of time to figure what we will do down the road, hoping to get it running before we make any real decisions. I will start a new thread to get further input on a quality 4 bbl intake/carb combo for the 302. I'm sure we will rebuild at some point, so many options to consider.

    Hey All,

Found an old spare so we could get away from the tire with the huge leak. Got the engine bay cleaned up some, pulled the plugs and put some ATF on top of all eight cylinders. Pulled the starter, but when I hooked directly to battery via jumper cables, I only got sparks, no spin?? I will have it checked at a local shop and rebuild or replace.
My son also cleaned out the trunk, not too bad.
