I had a stock 1600 in my bug and beat a couple civics, and real close on others. The best thing you can do is build a motor yourself, most of it's in tuning and how you drive, I'm honestly considering another bug, they are a lot cheaper to restore, and the gas milage is hard to beat if you build the motor right. I was getting mid/high 30's highway, high 20's around town, all bolt ons, good cylinder head selection, distributor selection, and tuning. The biggest mistakes people make is in not using proper engine cooling tin, and using aftermarket distributors that don't have vaccuum advance. Vaccuum advance makes a huge difference in gas mileage on any engine that is daily driven.

Update, re-uploaded pics on first post, and no new pics, but I'm working on carpeting my tunnel, and mocking up a center console.

You have no idea, huge improvement. Before it seemed like I would slide across the seat! Now I can take turns at speed comfortably.

WOW I think it is really funny that When Ford put out the Maverick back in the day it was so they could compete with econo-box cars like the VW Bug and here we have someone 40 years later making choices back and forth between whether he wants a 71 Maverick or a 71 Bug. That is Ironic.

I loved my 1966 Bug when I had it too but I really couldn't see myself giving up either of my Mavericks today to get another Bug. I seriously would like to own another 66 bug one of these days. The one I had had a "Big Bore" kit on it. Oversized pistons and bigger Jugs, aftermarket cam shaft, Headers and Monza Mufflers worked over Carb and some other little stuff, The guy that helped Dad and I re-build the engine told us that it was right near 100 HP when he was done adding goodies to it. If you double clutched it just right you could pop the front tires off the ground about 3-4 inches. and it was a LOT quicker than any Stock Bug I ever ran against or rode in. LOTS and LOTS of fun....

The guy that rebuilt the engine with me and Dad had his own bug that turned 12's in the 1/4 mile with a Bug engine.
