I was using the factory duraspark dizzy with both vac. & mech. I'm heading for the track in about a 1/2 hr. I'm gonna try it with out the vac.

    Air Shocks???

I would change to a regular duty gas rear shock(50-50) and a different intake manifold ! The car will transfer weight better with these shocks .
A Torker 2 or Performer RPM would be an improvement . I run 39 degrees total timing with 94 octane fuel and 28x9MT slicks .

madmav I feel your pain:confused: I was experiencing the same probs...particularly the 60ft. time. Now I havn't taken the car to the track yet so I don't know how much I'm gonna take off my time, but my problem was the carter/edelbrock carb. I was gettin a slight bog on takeoff and the whole run would just feel sluggish, also had some slight pinging on the high end till I disconnected the vacuum advance and advanced the timing a few degrees.
I put a Holley 670 double pumper with vacuum secondaries on last night and the difference is astounding, very responsive and when those secondaries open up you really know it and theres no pingin probs anymore even with the vacuum advance hooked up. I fully expect to take 2 tenths off my 60ft. time and 4 tenths off my total, if not more. Even though the plugs were burning clean it's obvious the old carb wasn't allowing the motor to run at it's full potential.

MadMav - I saw where you said the only thing on the AFB you had changed was the springs on the metering rods. Your 3000 converter and 4.62 gear want fuel quick. The squirters will only move you out of the hole for about the first .5-1.0 seconds. Just as the engine catches up from the squirter you want the secondaries to drop open. As you already know the AFB is very different to tune than a Holley. My guess is the counterweight on the secondary flapper probably needs to be removed or cutdown to make them jump in quicker. I apologise if you already know this.

Out of the box, the AFB secondaries open dog slow. To change when they drop in you change the counterweight. Removing weight behind the flapper pin will tip the secondaries in faster. Adding weight slows them down. This is the same function as changing secondary springs on a Holley. Just for an experiment - try taking the weight completely off the flapper and re-assembling. My guess is you might create a bog, but when the engine catches up it should feel like you lit a rocket. You can make your own counterweights to add back in until the bog goes away. If you put the screws back into the counterweight - dont forget to mash the threads over a little after you set them so your engine doesnt eat one:D

thanks for tip on the AFB cleaver, I had heard somewhere about the secondary counter weights, I was thinking about drilling a few holes in them? As Far as new results I hit the track yesterday, I unkooked the vac. advance set the initial at about 14, but my total won't get past about 28/29 I think I'm gonna have to get some new weights or maybe an aftermarket dizzy.
    my first run was
    .686 RT
    2.13 60'
    9.28 @ 75.0mph 1/8 m.

I bumped the timing a little, and reset the caltracs
    2nd run
    .756 RT
    2.05 60'
    9.14 @ 75.9mph

    3rd run
    .605 R/T
    2.08 60'
    9.13 @75.9mph

    4th run
.922 RT (I know I should have brought my blanket and pillow!)
    2.07 60'
    9.18 @75.6mph

    5th run
    .611 RT
    2.08 60'
    9.18 @ 75.5 mph

    1st round elimination running a 9.12 dial
    .755 RT
    2.06 60'
9.17 @ 69.9 mph ( I burped the throttle at the end as to not break out thats why the low mph) I won round one!

2nd rnd. elim. same dial(9.12) I lost due to a red light
.345 RT (stalled up the car at the line and the brakes never held enough )
    2.2 60'
    9.29 @75.7 mph

it was in the upper 70's not much wind but pretty humid.

I'm about to leave for the week I'll get back to you all next weekend HAPPY RACING!!

Vally Racer, I'm using stock 50/50 shocks in the rear, I used to run air shocks but I changed them out last winter
