for all the non-believer, Bryant is correct, I checked it out. There is a rubber ring that goes from the filler tube into the tank. The rubber think I'm pulling on is something else, the rubber ring Bryant is talking about is further down, it's that black thing you're looking at, it's a pretty good size thing too: And here is the pic of the old sending unit and the missing filter piece which I am sure is in the tank somewhere:
