We need a fuel tank for a 1970 Maverick and are finding them much more expensive than the larger 71 up tank. Any chance a later tank will fit the 70 and give us additional fuel storage? We don't mind a bit of fabrication.
Also wondering about interchangability with the sending unit. Are they different than a Mustang?

yep, they are a one year.
I'm sure someone will chime in on an interchangeable tank.

The '70 used a tank that was also the trunk floor. All others 71 and up had a real trunk floor and the tank was a separate unit strapped under the car.

While other Ford's like the early Mustang had the same "tank is the trunk too" build - the Maverick tank had a unique size and shape.
No other cars tank will swap in.
But the good news, as you probably found, is the tank is reproduced now and having to search for a decent used tank is history. Mustang sending units will fit. Not an exact fit, but very close and they work the fuel gauge pretty accurate. Melvins should have them.

Another option if your tank is still decent is to have it fixed and relined. Old school radiator shops used to do that around here. Might be a dying art but it is an option if you can find one.

NO other tank will work, even with modifications. Go with the repop.

Don't tell that to the 22 gallon '70 Mustang tank in my '70 Maverick. LOL

    Well.....that is true. :D

Maybe a little more than a "bit of fabrication" that the original poster asked about. LOL
