What years do the gas caps change?
Like the knobby one was 1970-71, the horned one was 1972-? And which year did the "MAVERICK" script on the cap start, 75 or 76?

    Thanks.

The design on the front carried over many different years.

The back is what is different. The amount of "ears" (2 or 4) and how they are "clocked" and the depth of the ears is what matters.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I have a 2 "ears" cap on my comet, Will a 4 "ears" work? Are they interchangeable?

As 71gold stated....it will work if you swap gas tank necks. Otherwise, my answer that you quoted above is still accurate.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't all Maverick filler necks all clocked the same? I had in my hand every Maverick filler neck except the '77 neck and only difference I seen was the length of the neck going into the tank...not counting the leaded/unleaded differences with the opening for the gas pump nozzle and flap door. I do know the Comet filler neck has a different bolt pattern than a Maverick and some year Comet necks could come with a different cap clocking. I also notice the ears on the Maverick caps are clocked different (but not the filler necks).

The differences I have seen across all years is (this list does not include the differences between Comet and Maverick):

    1. How far out the "neck" sticks out past the rear tail panel. This affects how far the gas cap sticks out away from the tail panel

    2. The "notches" in the gas filler neck to allow the "ears" of the gas cap to be inserted. Just a slight difference in size and maybe placement I seem to recall.

    3. When installing the cap, how far you can twist the cap around before it stops. This will affect the "clocking" appearance of the cap.

Here is the Maverick and Comet gas filler neck differences. Notice the bolt locations as well as the "notches" for the gas cap ears.

Look at the differences here as far as how far out the gas filler neck sticks out past the tail panel. The filler neck with the red paint does not stick out as far. The other one is off of a 1973. It is a not a big distance/difference.

I have both caps for my Comet. I use the 2 prong one and when I get to the car shows I put the 4 prong cap on it. It was a NOS one still in the box. They both fit and are clocked the same.

I used the early deluxe cap that came with the bailing wire on the '75 unleaded filler neck and the 76 locking cap on the same unleaded filler neck. They both fit and are clocked the same also.
