Hey, thanks for the info. Does anyone know the proper part number for the sending unit. That info would help me as well in my search.

Nobody currently makes a fuel sender for a 1976. You can probably get the 1974 one to work. It won't be eniterely accurate...but it would be close. You can only get them thru Auto Krafters.

Do you know the differences between the '71-'74 senders and the '75 up ones? I'm going to be needing one it the near future, and I heard the '74 one can be made to work, just wondering exactly what the differences are.

If and only if I am not mistaken (and I may be) I think my dad used a Granada sending unit once in his 72 and he used a granada unit and it worked BUT it wasn't accurate.... maybe it would work better in the 77 Maverick??

Oh and BTW one difference in the differnet years for the float and sending unit is the later year cars had 19 gallon tanks and the early year cars were 15

Have you tried contacting a local Ford dealership? They might be able to find one in their network - a dealer with a cache of old parts...

Last time I checked, Ford still carried the float. Part # COAZ-9202-B

In my "search" so far, I came across this site that rebuilds them. I was told it would cost in-between $75 - $150, depending on what needed to be done.

However, I'm surprised that a sending unit for a Mustang won't work, and as you know, they make everything for Mustangs! Perhaps the reason is by 1976 the Mustangs were in their "dark ages" when they were pretty much a warmed over Pinto, and not sharing much with the Maverick. By the way, my '76 sending unit is a two wire style, I guess some of the earlier ones only utilize one wire.

I think the differences are that the 75 and up ones are a little "longer" because it is a bigger tank. That is why I think the 1971-1974 will work....but it might not reach all the way to the bottom of the tank....or it won't read correctly on the guage. The guage would still "work" and read full...and go down as you use gas....but might not be accurate as the gas level goes down.

Well, i think in a couple of weeks i'll get one and find out. Can't be too hard to make it work, and auto krafter's are made of stainless. I like stainless.
I'll tell ya'll how it goes.
