And also sometimes otherwise known as a "divorce decree" as well. Generally speaking, we don't get the "jewelry and clothes thing".. anymore than they get the "engines and speed thing". So long as you balance it all out to what works for you and yours.. life is usually pretty damned good.
I really like this threads name. Maybe drop the "winter" part and it would be a pretty neat venue for people to post pic's/spec's for their recent parts acquisitions.. used or new.. stock or aftermarket. More pictures of those specific parts would be awesome too as they are seemingly tough to find without lots of random searching and thread panning. A "parts thread" would help consolidate some of them. Get so excited like a kid on Christmas morning that it makes me want to post pic's of my recent low mileage Auburn posi/3.55 gearset find on craigslist. $175 bucks for near mint condition parts worth about $800. Only way I could possibly be happier with the deal is if they were 3.80 gears.
I just retired and the only reason I can invest in the drag car for a hobby is because only having one wife, one kid and the same house for 35 years.
I wish I had a good tax return, only got back $37. I put in over 150 hours of overtime in the last 2 months.
just scored enough parts to build 2 big in big out toploaders that are face plated on 2nd, 3rd.and 4th gears.
Decided to build a cheap 351w which will be assembled in 3 wks,then fix the trans & get a drive shaft.Doing this because I want to move this summer & get a smaller house with no house pymnt as I have enough equity now to do it.I have parts strown everywhere & it will be much easier to move the car if it is under its own power with most of the parts in it.
Different reasons of course but doing the same thing and building my cars mule motor as we speak. Remember there's still tons of good running 351" boneyard motors hiding out there too, Dan. As I get older, non-running cars just seem like constant reminders of how much is left to do. And getting no major enjoyment from actually driving the car just bums/burns me out and/or usually has me re-prioritizing towards other projects which only makes it take even longer to complete. Thanx Groberts,even going the route I`m taking now still only gets the car ready to move as I need so many other things.Windsheild,rotors & rebuild calipers & run lines,mount fuel cell & hook up pump & run lines.Still have some fab work in engine bay to get headers in the car,plus many small things to buy,wiring,front spring eyes for rear leafs & on & on & on.Fix trans & get driveshaft made,paint car{already have paint},all this stuff adds up,BUT,however long it takes it will be worth it.I did not want to buy new valve springs so I`m going to use the compcam magnum 290 that I already have & retard it so it will make power to 6200 & after that it falls on its face.Motor should make apprx 400 400 which will be decent but is not what I wanted,Ah the short cuts we sometimes have to take.Hope your build keeps going well as we need all the help we can get.
Don't hamstring you motor just because of the weaker springs, Dan. PM me and I may have a set laying around in boxes that you could use with that cam. 1.29", 1.43", 1.55".. retainers for some, have quite a few decent sets for flats and rollers and I never keep stuff(especially valve springs) that have lots of mileage or got beat on so it's far from junk you'd be taking chances with.
Thanx Groberts.the springs I have are new cranes (96872) & they match that cam.With 1.72 rockers I get almost 600 lift which gives me 350lbs over the nose.Instead of having to buy a new cam(lunati 241,249 dur.@.050,.640 lift w/ those rockers),it means thats money for other things.I`d like to have the lunati cam but you need springs w/ 450lbs over the nose,so basically the route I`m taking just helps me get all the other stuff I need without having to spend any more money in that dept.I also need tires all the way around,the M/T pro backet ET rears(29.5/10.5/15)are $500 bucks & I still need front runners.Several friends of mine are running those M/T with good success.you don`t need screws in the rims,you run more air pressure,& they last longer than slicks plus the car is more stable because of a thicker sidewall & you will be faster w/ them.So you know how it goes,you cut corners in some areas but certain things that you know work,you do it especially when it saves you money down the road.
Ok, I get it now. The way I read that assumed you were going to retard the cam and make do with a spring that would hold you up at 6,200 rpm just to fudge it all together. And yes.. I know how these things can snowball out of control. Always good to have a solid realistic plan and stick with it. Sounds like you're on your way to a good end result.
