man this is harder than I thought LOL. Another question: if get a glasspack or flowmaster, where do they need to be placed on the exhaust to make the loudest sound? Does it matter? Should they just be placed where the stock muffler was?
The closer to the engine, the more noise inside the vehicle on the Flowmasters. We put them on my son's Chevelle just after the headers and the entire car was a reverberator. Hurt to drive. On my Ranchero I put it in the back just befor the bumper and it is still loud enough to set off car alarms, but not in the car. I have the Glass pack (12 inch) on my Mav in the back before the bumper. Still loud. There will be more heat transmitted to the interior if they are under the floor. They will also be lower and more apt to hit speed bumps etc.
to bad you do not live closer to me....I am getting rid of my purple hornies....got a deal worked for sponsor ship on PINKY to run some street car races next year, they providing me the melodies
Shipping shouldn't be too expensive on those Purple Hornies. Those are supposed to be really good pipes.
If you want the sound of flows at half the price get a pair of summit race muffles, they are chambered just like the flows and almost sound identicle.
what about the cherry bomb glasspacks? I've heard of those alot. Any good? have any of you with the glasspacks or flowmasters gotten stopped by the cops because the car made too much noise??
ive only heard those on Asian cars (alot of friends and people at school have their little 4 cylinders with open header) so I dont know how they sound on our cars! probably really cool on a V-8! But they're illegal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Non-stock mufflers are illegal in most states if they make the car louder then stock, but you can get away with them easier then an open exhaust
most flows are 50-state legal. here in cali i think they have to be less than 100decibels BTW: i love the sound of a open header 4-cyl @ 10,000RPM
I run my 302 with open headers alot. It really does sound good. Definitely not legal, and definitely MUCH louder than any muffler setup. I have those exhaust dumps so you can pop off the cap and VOILA...open headers. I do it around the neighborhood, just to wake up kids on Sunday Mornings :evilsmile It just sounds like a high performance Drag car...too bad it doesn't run as fast as it sounds.
haha my car sounds really good w/ no exhaust and open headers. ANd your right... to bad it prob wont run as good as it sounds. hehe
One thing to keep in mind is that muffler sound is greatly effected by the motor pushing it. High compression and cams with serious overlap completely change the sound. Mufflers that seem mild on stock engines really wake up and sound good on performance ones. Every combo sounds a little different. You almost have to guess what to buy and hope you like it.
and you are right, quicker response times off the line, but lower ET (has been addressed on another thread)
