And the answer is...... Diesel! I dropped the fuel pump hose into a gallon of fresh gas ..... it huffed and puffed and smoked .... and then it ran great ...... smoke is gone ..... boy am I an idiot! Luckily when the gas tank was restored and lined the guy but a drain plug in it ... Now I just gotta get rid of a full tank of gas/diesel mix .... Well now I have a good 302 long block for sale .... and a Edelbrock 600 carb for sale ...
No idea ... next time I have a chance I'm gonna drive over to that gas station and see where the diesel nozzle is ... I'm pretty sure I remember what pump I used ....
Glad you got it figured out. Sucks what it cost you though! Blame it on the station, we won't know the difference! I think the 74 needs a V-8 Conversion.
Dan you make me laugh so much! a couple of things first 1. diesel nozzles are always green! never use a clear plastic fuel filter under your hood next to your engine, pure fire hazzard, I've seen a few cars go up in smoke because of this, put a metal filter or one of the heavy duty glass ones, much safer. Diesel fuel is oil based and very heavy, your car would not run on it anyway, it contains cetane which is a wax property and adds lubricity to diesel engines, I doubt you could get spark plugs hot enough to burn diesel since trucks use combustion (pressure) to burn it. that mixed fuel won't be any good for anything except a bon fire. good luck friend. (ps if your going to run diesel you might want some big chrome stacks on your maverick!!!
LOL .... Actually I put my fuel filter between the firewall and the fuel pump ... no heat down there so it's safe ... I think the diesel clogged up the filter. I never noticed Diesel had green handles ...
yes sir, look the next time you go to gas station, no I mean really look, they did this to make folks realize a difference so they won't put gas and diesel mix. I think the rental car companies had some thing to do with this. thats a good idea for your fuel filter down under, if its diesel soaked then repalce it you will never clean it.
Dan, with Wayne's big F-350 and powerstroke diesel, he grabs a diesel pump handle a little more oftern than the rest of us. You probably went to a pump that has the older flip up handles to turn it on and nozzles - one for gas and one for diesel.
yes sir with 108 gallons to fill it grabs me about once a month or so, but I can go about 1600 miles!!! on a fill up
Damn Dan, I dont think I can say anything to make you feel better, but at least the problem is solved.
dan, glad you got it running you didn't feed my "grimlin" any of that diesel fuel..did you ...and if you are through with him...pass him on to someone else... ...frank...
Glad you got it figured out. When things go wrong we tend to think the worst and lose site of the order of elimination to find a problem. If you definetly feel something is o.k. check it anyway. Once I ran out of gas and had no idea because the gas gauge was not working properly. My friend banged on my gas tank and made me feel stupid when it had that hollow sound. It happens so don't feel bad. You have it licked now and you have a better engine to boot. Look at all the practice you gained reinstalling an engine.
Look at the bright side, you have a brand new mill that will last a long time. Diesel pumps have been the green pumps for years. It was always done that way so people wouldn't mix them up. Now that just about every car on the road has an unleaded filler neck, I have noticed that some stations are now using green for regular gas. The BP I just filled up uses a green handle for their regular unleaded. I am not a big fan if that. If you want to make sure it never happens again, swap an unleaded filler neck in place of your standard one. The diesel nozzle won't fit in it.
Just drained the tank ... put some gas in it and drained it again and let the fuel line from the tank to the pump drain as well. Hooked her back up .... put about 4 gallons of gas in the tank and started the engine. It ran ... then started smoking a little while the fuel line flushed out ... and then the smoke cleared and all is well! Will drive up the the gas station tomorrow and fill it up ... and no green handle this time! Thanks for all those who offered suggestions throughout this ordeal ... sorry to throw a monkey wrench in the diagnosis ... the diesel came out of left field!
