Hey Terry, Looks great. O BTW, on the 73 I personally would keep it the factory color and put some pin-stripe on it JMO.
I'm not sure about sanding. I've done some. I can tell you this, my arms are too short to reach Charleston from here. I've got to find a different, better vinyl primer. The paint is rubbing off the door handles, but staying fine on the door panels. I wish I could sand the door handles, but that would remove the grain. Ideas?
Napa sells an Adhesion Promoter...you might give that a try. Scuffing it with anything runs the risk of ruining the grain..like you said. I've had good success with Napa's vinyl colors too. I recently found out that ALL of Napa's paint products are actually Sherwin-Williams.
I'm going to remove the paint off the door handles and start over. I've found and bought Flexible Primer Surfacer made by SEM Products of Cahrlotte, NC. It says "provides superior adhesion sealing properties, film build and flexibility when coating automotive urethane, plastic, and other similar substraters." I will take the paint off with mineral spirits and ScotchBrite pads. I will once again use 3M Adhesive, Wax, and Mark remover. I will apply two coats of this primer per the instructions, and paint the handles again. I don't think there is a better way. Is there? Oh, I'll be using a spray vinyl dye instead of the Duplicolor vinyal paint.
