Ok, I'm right in the middle of changing the seal now. So while I got yalls attention, I noticed more leaks. In pic #2 what is this cover called? It's on the passenger side and it's dripping around it. And I also guess I'm going to have to replace the pan gasket to. It's dripping around 3 bolts. How hard is it to replace the filter in there while I'm at it? The previous owner said he had replaced the front seal under the torque converter, and it did look new still so thats fine. Wish I would have took the time to replace all these gaskets while I had the damn thing sitting out on the ground. Ohh well, lesson learned the hardway I guess.
That's the servo cover. There's a piston in there that applies the intermediate (2ng gear) band. I made the gast gasket I put in one. kind of a pain. Careful when you take it off as it's got a spring behind it. Try your local transmission rebuilder for the gasket. The parts house almost definately won't have it and likely the guy behindf the counter will not even know what it is. Good luck. Next step, pull the trans and ship it off to Dave H (oldman) for the hot rod treatment!
Before you pull the driveshaft, put some pressure on it near the tranny to check for slack in the rear of the tranny. I don't remember details, but the rear of the tranny can get slack in it and leak whether the seal has gone bad or not.
Well I already have it put back together (no more smoke!), but yea I could wiggle the shaft on the transmission a little bit by hand. It seemed much tighter when I put the drive shaft back in though. I'm replaceing those other 2 gaskets tomarrow (hopefully it won't be to hard to find them) and then it's on to installing a tranny cooler and getting a Dura Spark II ignition system together.
