Here's another hot rod show in Northern California. Sparky George, a local auto restorer in San Ramon, has been holding this show for three years to raise money for families of soldiers killed in Afganistan or Iraq. I volunteered last year. I didn't buy my Maverick until June.

This is a small show, with about 40 vehicles. You can come Saturday or Sunday or both. I think it costs $20 each day to enter a car. Cars range from original Mustangs to chopped 30's and 40's cars. I recall a Pinto there last year, but no Mavericks. You park around the perimeter of the vacant lot, which is slated to be the Civic/City Center in San Ramon, but has been tangled up in local politics for 10 years.

Attendees can buy voting chips to vote for their favorites. I don't recall what the prizes are, but Sparky raffled off a restored 1966 Mustang coupe last year. Here's the Press Release for the show.

    Hats Off America presents
Third Annual Muscle Car, Hot Rods and Art Fair

Hats Off America presents the Third Annual Muscle Car, Hot Rods and Art Fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday, May 20-21, on the grass field at the corner of Bollinger Canyon Road and Camino Ramon, San Ramon. Admission is free. Children are welcome. Sorry, no pets.

Along with cars and art, there will be children’s activities, live bands, vendor booths, a beer and wine garden, and more.

Non-profit organizations, civic groups and youth organizations are encouraged to participate. Call for information. The event is also seeking corporate sponsors and volunteers.

Hats Off America was created by Sparky George to provide financial support to the families of military personnel killed in the line of duty while serving the United States in Iraq and Afghanistan. HOA’s goal is to raise money through personal and corporate donations that will be donated to the troops' beneficiaries to provide a small measure of comfort while reminding them their ultimate sacrifice while serving our country will not be forgotten.

George, owner of Classic Car Auto Restoration and Repair in San Ramon, is a Vietnam vet and the “Bear Flag Runner” of Danville. In honor of service personnel being deployed in Iraq, the Bear Flag Runner has been running six miles a night, five days a week with a five-pound weight, regardless of weather, since September 15, 2002. The Hats Off America organization also takes donations and pledges for the miles run.

Hats Off America fundraising events are held each year and include a Red Cross Blood Drive, January 7, 2006; Casino Night, January 21, 2006, “The Muscle Car, Hot Rod & Art Fair,” May 21-22, 2006; Red T-Shirt 10KRun/5K Walks, February 18, 2006; tickets for Wigged Out, a performance of Victoria’s Hair on Stage, Danville March 18, 2006, and a Red T-Shirt 10KRun/5K Walk in November 2006.

For information, sponsorship and volunteer opportunities, contact Sparky George at (925) 855-1950 thebearflagrunner@yahoo.com For more information, visit www.hatsoffamerica.us. The site includes links to other organizations that support our troops. Hats Off America is a nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization.
