imo, this is caused by one of two things...lack of back pressure ( you do need some), or there is a leak in the exhaust system somewhere and its sucking in cold air on decel.

Bigger pipe reduces velocity, so the idea that "bigger is better" is nothing but a myth. Bigger is better only to a point, after which it hurts more than it helps. If you lose velocity, you lose power and performance. 3-inch dual exhausts are too big for a small V-8 application, and I don't care what anyone says to the contrary. The only thing 3-inch would achieve is making the system louder, and perhaps looking cool. It's not gonna make more horsepower. 3-inch pipe is also a lot more expensive, an unnecessary expense. 2-1/4" is plenty big for most performance small-block V-8 applications, and 2-1/2" for a "really built" motor...
