Picked her up today Let the parts buying frenzy begin!!!! Overall it's a pretty straight car. i have one pound-outable dent in the passenger door, bumpers are straight, surface rust on the top, where the vinyl top was, and will be again. I started removing components from the engine compartment this afternoon in preperation for degreasing, and pressure washing. Had to bulldose a couple of rat condos, but it looks like they didn't chew the wiring too bad, i only found one suspect connector. I even found the radio + bezel in the trunk, saved 40.00 right there alone. Here's a undercarriage shot. looks pretty good i think. Well that's it for tonite. i'll have new pics tomorrow after I come home from junkyardin.
Solid for sure! I saw your comment about possibly using a C6... You can, but you are better off with a C4 or AOD. The C6 eats up alot of power just turning itself and is a very tight fit into our cars. Mavs were never meant to house a C6, so everything needs to be custom made. AOD is easier and has the benefit of overdrive. Good luck! Dave
Well round one of underhood cleaning, degreasing, etc... has begun here are a few new pictures after a couple hours of scrubbing. i used purple power full strength, and scotch brite no scratch pads. Couldn't get back here too good yet. I will do better when the master cylinder and steering come out. Here are a couple before shots for comparison purposes. I kinda thought i'd use black paint in the engine compartment, but now i think I'll have Carquest mix me up some matching paint and just touch up the surface rusted areas. I also used some rust-converting primer under where the battery box was. (this was the worst area) So far so fun. Time for . I'm tired. Later
I'd definitely keep it body color. Makes your entire engine compartment jump out...not just the engine. Looking great...keep the pics coming.
Another day and a little more done. Here are a couple of almost finished shots of the battery box area. Still have to do some sanding, and beter color matching. But I don't think it's too bad for a rattle can job in the backyard, half full on IPA's Here are a couple shots of the banged up valances, I started work on theses already, and got them pretty straight. this side had a little help in getting damaged I found this wedged pretty deep between the valance and the lower portion of the headlight bucket. Closeup shot of the section of tire removed And last for tonight, I got it up on my "work pad" so that i can get under it to remove the seats, carpet, ect... Later
so far so good it looks like if your going to small bumpers dont even worry about those valence pieces cause they have to come off anyway. its replaced with a one piece valence that wraps all the way under the front bumper. the swap was pretty easy and well worth it, just hard and expensive getting the bumpers, front and rear valances and rear 1/4 pieces. my car looked like yours except nasty yellow with a white top you mentioned pulling the side trim in your first post. im in the process of this myself. im replacing my front fenders and doors due to rust with factory "de-trimmed" replacments but i still have the rear 1/4 panels to do. theres like 6 holes on each side. there big enough to stick a pen through i have to fill and also holes the same size on the tail panel where the filler panel for the big bumper used to be. lotta work but looks a lot better when your through with it. shaves about 130 lbs off your car too with the big ol'bumpers replaced. good luck and keep the pics comming
Yeah, I'd love to do a bumper conversion. But obtaining the parts so far have been nearly impossible. So for all intents and purposes I may just hang in there for a while until a local small bumper parts car comes up. They have kinda "grown" on me a little and now I don't think they are all that bad looking. Either way it'll be one of the last things I'll do on this project, so who knows maybe I'll find them before I'm done. Tonight I'm gonna get the car up on stands, so that I can remove the interior and get the car cleaned out.
Got kind of a late start this evening, but I did manage to get the front seats and carpet out. most all of it came out smooth and easy, then came the drivers side. Surface rust looks minimal, but it did take out the underliner and turn it a nice rust color. I peeled some of it back, and the floor looks good underneath still. Nothing a putty knife, DA sander, primer, three beers, and top coat won't fix. Here is a look at everywhere else, lookin pretty good. Another day, a little more done. heck I'm not even as tired tonite. I must be getting used to this stuff. Later
