Ok, I have taken the tranny out for the umpteenth time when it would not bolt up within 1/4" or more. I looked at the input shaft. It is a 24/24 spline. Both my tranny and torque converter are 24/24. I have a spare C4 sitting around. I looked at it. It is a 26/26 spline. Strange thing is that the input shaft on the 24/24 is 1/4 - 3/8" longer than the 26/26. The 26/26 input shaft will not fit into my tranny. I do not know about either of the torque converters (brand, etc). They came with the trannies. So, to see if the torque converter is the problem, I need to buy a new 24 spline torque converter. Then again, I still have a longer input shaft. Perhaps a new torque converter will be deeper and make up for that length? Maybe I just need to buy a new, shorter input shaft. Talk to me.
How about taking the TC into a reputable auto parts store (if such a thing exists) and ask to see a TC for your application. Put them side by side. MD
Go back to the guy that rebuilt the trans.if anyone would know what is going on he will if he is a good trans guy
Does the input shaft have different length splines on each end ? if so try turning it around and see if converter slides in any deeper, I cant find anything saying the correct way it should go in for sure. If your shaft is 24/24 then is is a 69 and older transmission, a 26/26 input shaft indicates the transmission is a 70 only and if the shaft is 26/24 it is a 71 or newer with 26 spline going into converter. It is possible that some internal parts of transmission were mismatched. But it is a known fact converters sometimes get made wrong from my experience and Krazy Comets. No need to try and install tranny until you have enough space at face of bell housing to converter face measured off a straight edge.
The splines on my 24/24 input shaft are the same length on each end, so it appears it does not matter which end goes in the tranny. It is different with the 26/26 shaft, with the splines on one end being longer than the splines on the other end (& therefore it matters which end goes in the tranny).
Wish you were closer I still have my 24 spline torque converter that I would give to you, its like a 3,500 stall and a 10"
Yeah if he is not in a hurry to get it done I would ship it to him just have to pack it up good so no fluids leak out and the stall is good for him
Thanks for the offer on the free TC. Zip is 29040 if you want to check on shipping. Here is my current conclusion. My current TC is going into the tranny with 3 clicks, like it is supposed to. I have done my measuring and am sure it is going in all the way into the tranny. However, after more measuring, it still sticks out too far and when it mates up with the flex plate, it will not let me tighten the bell housing bolts down. I happen to have another C4 and TC, so I put them on the work bench and compared the two trannys/TC's. The TC on the Tranny on the work bench goes back further in the bell housing than the one I want to install (that has been rebuilt). Aha! I spoke with the tech at Ford Racing and he says a C4 is a C4 and a TC for a C4 is just that, there are no differences other than diameter. Really? I know some are 10", 11" and 12", but are they all the same thickness? It seems I need a thinner TC or there is a problem in the rebuild of the tranny? Thoughts? Thanks for all the help.
AFAIK the larger converters have a wider bolt pattern(read use 164T flex) so cannot be used with the smaller 157T flex... But again the studs won't line up in that case...
Just taking a guess at the weight at 25 pounds and I believe it is heavier than that UPS wants $60.00 to ship and USPS is close to the same. So it is not worth it to ship it to you and still have the same problem due to unseen problems but I will if you want it I also have a stock 12" 26 spline converter that came off of a 157t flex plate. I measured the bolt hole spacing and it was 10 1/2" then I measured the 24 spline and it was 10 1/2" as well and it was on a 157t flex as well.
It's possible to ship by Greyhound Bus fairly cheaply... Guys on old radio board sometime ship console radios... If I remember correctly the converter I sent back weighed 26Lb, but Summit sent a return shipping label so cost me nothing..
Thanks for the offer and consideration, anyway. Still trying to figure out my situation. The TC will only go so far.?!
