sorry for not finishing that post. been a long night. I was thinking of rotating the entire sender in the hole if it would work. That is why I would need to discard the sender filter in exchange for rubber fuel line. I would just have to keep an eye on mileage and keep mostly a full tank. Yes the mountains would make it tough.
The fuel sender seal and the fuel pipe (gooseneck) seal are the only ones I know about. Didn't know if an o ring would work or not. I checked with every place in town and they said that they weren't even available for order and the specialty parts finder guy couldn't find them either. say them on autokrafters so I figured I'd order them from there. I guess I could have pulled it today if an o ring would have worked. I didn't know that tho and the risk that I wouldn't be able to get it back in til the parts shipped from online seemed too great.

didn't see the fuel tank on rockauto for my year (or for '70-74, the interchangeable years). Is it under a different place than fuel/air? I'd definitely go that route if it were an option. The autokrafters tank is over $200.

I just priced out the two local places to me for cleaning out the tank.
Both places want over $200 to clean the tank and dispose of the haz-mat from the process. Since new tanks are only $120 - $150 it makes more sense to get a new tank and line it with POR-15 liner. The cleaner, metal prep and liner costs about $75 so for about the same $200 you get a brand new tank and it is rust proof so it will out-last your car.

Hey Paul. I still haven't fixed that shifter seal. This stuff came up. It is still leaking but my fluid level isn't going down... it's wierd. where can you get a tank for a 71 mav for under $200? The only place I actually found one is autokrafters and that is $220 after shipping. The parts stores like advanced and carquest can't even get them at all.

so there is no difference that happens when upgrading from a 15 gallon to 19 gallon tank rather than needing longer strap bolts?

well poo my pants. I guess I'm gonna do that. Here I thought I have to do cutting or welding to fit a different tank in there. Thanks. I'm gonna order one as soon as I get up back to boone.

k guys. got up here and didn't have internet yet. made it up the mountain fine with two 86012 fuel filters from carquest in line. I put one before my fuel pump and one before my carb. I had to screw in a fitting to let me attach a rubber fuel line to the front of my carb - no biggie. I got 110 miles (to the halfway point) without any problems at all and changed out the filter before my fuel pump for the hell of it just cuz I had extras. Made it the last 110 miles without any problems and all was well. I was going 65-75mph the whole way too. It was a good 20 minute break at the halfway point because some people "haven't seen a maverick in years" sort of thing. I tried to drive it in town the next day and stalled out with a clogged fuel filter after about 100 yards. It was the one before the carb that I hadn't changed that clogged. I changed it out, got the car home and now I'm just going to wait for my new gas tank to come before I drive it anymore. I still have to figure out my tranny leak, put the side markers and grill back on and polish my trim and all that fun stuff to keep me busy. Thanks again for the input. Hopefully this helps someone with a similar problem later on. It feels good to be home again.

Running two filters will put extra strain on the fuel pump and could blow the diaphragm. Glad to know you got home

Glad you made it up the mountain Phill.I guess we know what the limit is on those filters now with a rusty tank.
