How to safety wire?

    Safety wire schmafety wire...

    The services are actually phasing out safety wire. When I was designing the liftfan for the JSF, no safety wire was allowed. All fasteners had to be self locking. We use poly locks and interference locks. Fasteners are only good for 1 use most of the time. The super expensive titanium spanner nuts can be used 10 times I think before they have to be overhauled or just thrown out.

    Most fasteners will hold themselves together simply from the load on the thread. Sometimes you can't do that because it will kill a gasket or a crush something if you go to full torque.

    Anywho, safety wire is nice for fasteners in a flow path. Insurance that one of those buggers won't go through the core and wreck the engine if it comes loose.
