hey everyone! after my car broke down five years ago i'v let my 1971 comet sit on the farm for five years with alot of it's parts in the trunk. i'v put everything back together but there is no spark. it turns over and i bought a new coil but the distributor doesn't spin when i try to start it. i can't figure out how to get the distributor off to replace it (i found one bolt, took it off and the whole thing is still solid) is there a quick fix that i can make the distributor rotor spin again? how can i take out the distributor? the manual isn't much help it just says to take the bolts off and pull it out after marking some guide points any suggestions? it's a 200 engine 6 cylinder -Kyle
If the distributor is not spinning then either the roll pin sheared on the gear or the camshaft is not turning.
How do you know the distributor isn't spinning? And if it's not, then like Maverick1970 said, your cam isn't turning. Removal is just removing that on bolt and lifting out, but after sitting for 5yrs it may need a little persuasion.
yep, only one bolt holds that baby in. re man distros are pretty cheap too but Frank has a valid point...what made you park it 5 years ago?? good luck, and welcome to the board!
The distributor can seize into the block, sometimes you have to give it a few taps with a hammer to loosen it up. If you've removed the bolt, and the hold down, there should be nothing else holding it in...
five years ago i took it on a highway trip and comeing back it died on a turn. it would start for a few seconds then would die again. don't know whats wrong. i know the distributor shaft isn't spinning because i tried to start the engine with the distributor cap off and the shaft stayed still. so how would i go about seeing if the cam is working properly? or if the roll pin is still good? and what is the "hold down"?
The "hold down" is the little bracket under the bolt you removed. I would start by removing the distributor and lets go from there.
yep, no timeing chain at all actually. forgot i took it off and where i even put it, it's not in the trunk. this is assuming that the timeing chain goes on the outside of the block right, not the inside? plus i came across an oil pump so i'll have to open the oil pan up again. my grandpa's place is great for it tho, he has a pit so u don't have to jack up the car and the distributor, i took it out with some WD40 (thanks guys) and rotated the shaft from the bottom and there is a spot where it's harder to turn the shaft (might have happened when i wrenched on it thinking that that was how to get it off) think the distributor is still good?
O.K....now you have officically lost us all. Let's start here. Have somebody crank over the engine while you look down into the hole where the distributor was. Is the "gear" down inside that hole moving?
