I have the arm rest, and all clips loose , but I can not get the door opener handle loose. What is the trick on getting the interior opener handle loose so that I can remove the panel? This is o0n a 1975 Maverick
There is a screw in the center of the handle bezel behind the handle. Pull the handle out like you are opening the door and you will see the screw. then remove the bezel. The handle does not have to come off to get the panel off, just the bezel.
As Frank stated, there is a black plastic cup "insert" that needs to be removed in order to see the screw.
Yep, You are right. You must hold the door release handle out, then slip a small knife blade down between the front of the chrome bezel, and the black insert to release two small clamps, and ease the insert out to see the screw.. Thanks Frank
I know this is an old thread but I also need help. On the backdoor, panel removed, what is the trick to putting a new door handle on? It seems like everything is about 1-1/2 inches away from the closest reach from any direction. There is a little black rubber plug that I took out that should line me up with the unreachable screw. But you may have to be Luke Skywalker to be able to get to that without seeing it. Is there a trick to putting on a door handle?
First off....the rear outside handles are different than the front outside handles. The rear bolt goes in at a different angle, and the push button actualtor is totally different. Removing the black plug should gain you access. Use a u-joint on a ratchet extension.
I figured it out, use the old handle and the guts out of the new one. Off to the other side. I think the latch itself is jacked up. If the door is shut, button on the outside is gone, the handle inside doesn't do anything, and when you snake your hand up to the latch assembly the paddle doesn't do anything. Can you get the door open a different way? Take it off the hinges?
I wouldn't do that. I'd simply take the inner door panel off and reach in and trip the mechanism to open the door. Taking the door off the car doesn't guarantee that the locking mechanism will come off of the Nader pin. It's designed not to release during a collision so you're going to have a bit of a hard time doing it that way. Taking the door panel off while the door is closed will be a bit more difficult but can be done.
