I posted this just last week - http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=70596 Beautiful red Maverick sitting there by an historic Mustang drag car and a straight front axle early Chevy II with a 409 and a tilt nose and the red Maverick got more OOOOH's and AWWWW's that anything else near it.
Just a little profiling, but not all "car Guys" are the same............... Just my opinion since I wasn't there to see the cars but this sounds like the wrong group of guys to just "park" your car with..................... These are the type of guys that want there ego's stroked on how much money they have into there cars, how cherry there paint is, and how the areas best (most expensive) pinstripper did some work to there car last week. This group of guys has prob been hanging out for 5 years together or more. There not used to new young blood. Don't get me wrong I like talking to these guys at the shows ALOT, you just have to approach them in a little different manner.......... tell them how great there cars are first, then point to your "working project". Stop by a few more times, unless there complete A##holes most car guys warm up sooner or later as long as your turning a wrench. I always like seeing younger generation at shows, even with imports. Its showing us that our hobby is surviving
All that matters is do you like your car.You called your own car crapp,so why shouldn't they.If you like your car,be proud of it and what you know it can be.Show pride in what you have,FOR YOU HAVE MAVERICK.Trust me,I have had a lot of major muscle cars,They aint no better than our Mavericks, and our parts a lot less expensive.Just my 2 cents.
You sound like me when I was younger. Everyone used to give me crap, calling it a grandma car. I bought my Maverick before all my other cars I have owned, it was my first car. And guess what? I still own my Maverick. I kept it because it is dependable and after restoring it looks good. But when I first got it the 302 was tired, and it was giving me problems. This is what I did to make my Maverick to what it is now. First overhauled the engine giving it some updates also, while the engine was out I cleaned the engine bay and repainted it. Then when I had more money had the rest of the car painted. Then I went through the transmission, and started replacing the little stuff. I love corvettes have owned two of them, but most corvette guys are snobs and that is why I don't join their clubs. This forum is awesome because we are just car guys, and like a little of everything. After putting in all the hardwork into the Maverick you will get respect. It will just take some time.
To answer your question; Does your car run? = yes. Do you see alot of them running around? = no. Do "you" think your car is a joke? = your probaly like me, this is what I tell people, "Even though it needs a little work its AWESOME to me." PIX please
With age you'll come to care less and less about what other people think. Or should i say it just doesnt bother you as much. Sometimes its tough to find a decent cruise night spot. Theres a lot of morons in the car thing but some great people as well. I dont really do the cruise night thing. Did a few last year but its gets kind of boring. Same cars each week. I love my car and it gets tons of attention. Sometimes too much at stop lights. A young guy with an old car should be the focus of the older guys at a cruise. They were likely all in your shoes at some point. Guess they forget that. Keep up the faith and do what you can on your car. My first Mav looked like a primed junker but I sure showed those old farts in there big block Camaros when I left em standing at the track.
Thanks alot guys and don't get me wrong I love my car it's just basically in crap condition. When I drive my SVT around with perfect paint my enkei rims and nice sounding exhaust people look but don't really care. My Maverick on the other hand as rusty and poorly primed as it is people will come up to me and say "wow a Maverick I used to have one of those as a kid. 302?" and I love to see there faces when I say 351. I probably shouldn't have parked there uninvited but really I was just enjoying my car whether they liked it or not. In my opinion my car would have won a trophy if they were handing them out because it's not all about what it looks like. Oh yea and forget car shows I go to the track and I would have smoked that 289 mustang but they probably don't want to get rubber on that pretty little paint job.
I agree, and I love looking at them for different reasons. I would love to have one sitting in the garage and hope to one day. Shows are just that shows, if your car isn't built for show that doesn't mean its a joke just means its built for a different reason. Around here I can go to a local show and shine at the local 5 and Diner on Tuesday see some normal street/show cars. On Thursday hit up a rockabilly show and see some rat rods. Friday hit up a small show early with the some more show and shine, head to another one and see rat rod guys and old school 40-50's car not shined up, later that night head to a different area and see more of a street muscle show and also an import section. Saturday around here is the big "pavillions" (longest running weekly car show in America) show where you find your extreme show and shine. These cars are the local show winners, also some muscle, a little import after hours, and a bike show. Than theres always my FAVORITE place, the dragstrip! Always cars hanging out here What I'm saying is just cause you don't fit in with one bunch of guys don't mean there is not somewhere you fit in. But keep in mind there all car guys, and just cause they prefer a different type of car don't mean they don't have the same hobby. Try talking to the other guys, I bet like every crowd some of them are cool, and sprinkled with a##holes.
think of what you have now and don't let anybody talk you in to getting rid of that car! these cars are far an few now . If you a chance to save some money do it a little at a time and fix the car that way.every little item helps. Keep dreaming big and have fun with what you have. The cars they make today are more money takers then they're worth. Keep your head up and smile.
No Joke Car Young Grabber Do not sweat the elite, your car is paid for and I bet most of theirs is not or Mamma bought it for them. Mavs are different and so are the owners. Most people are sheep just following along with the herd. I is fun to be a goat because we are independent. I used to have a used car dealership and kept circa 150 cars instock. I could put a ford or mopar on payments and the car would usually run the note. If I put ANY kind of GM out they usually wound up puking a trnsmission or engine. Note trash will leave your car laying on the side of the road and walk away. I spent between $5-7000 a month in repairs and month in and month out I spent 70-80% of repair money on 30% of my cars which were GMs. Based on hard experience I call GMs the American Yugo!!!!! Forty years ago I told my then partner that is GM kept building junk they would someday go TU (tango Union). So be proud of your Mav, it has survived the test of time. In just conversation ask the GM owner how many times he has had to rebuild his transmission, he will most likely say 2or 3, they think it is normal. Most GM owners think it is normal to work on their cars all weekend to be able to drive them the next week. Owning a GM is like making babies neither requires a lot of gray matter! Texasjack
Me too also, but car shows give us something to look at during the off season. I also like going to the little saturday night "cruise ins" at the Sonic or any of the other places they have 'em (mall parking lots, etc) because most of those cars are driven into these little informal events.
