As the new guy and daughter we certainly don't want to be responsible for rekindling what appears to be a long standing feud between the inliners and the v-8ers. I believe the decision has been made, the original 200 will stay, as I mentioned before nobody's looking for a 12 second quarter mile. This is just one part of the rebuild and I'm sure we'll have plenty of questions for everybody as we go along. But thank all of you anyway I have enjoyed the spirited argument.
...you certainly made some statements. Statements that are opinions, not facts. And, it really isn't worth wasting any more time on.
Yes! Suggestions are great. This on-going debate always seems to revolve around "opinions", and a one-size-fits-all scenario. For the non-calculus physics types: If you're on a budget, desire simplicity & ease of maintenance and build, want more horse power (but, not excessive), and a challenge - an I6 is the way to go. Yes, there is no question that measuring in economies of scale that a V8 will out-perform an I6. But in order to get there, one has to make a bigger investment. Measuring cubic inch to weight (stock engines), an I6 has less to drag along. (Conveniently measured on a bathroom scale) An I6 is inherently balanced. A V8, being (approx) 120 degree offset is inherently out-of-balance. To compensate, counter-weights on the crankshaft are employed. It takes a lot of energy to over-come the added mass. And finally, a V8 has to wind-up, before putting out the ponies. An I6, because of good low-end torq, you're off the line first. Racing is all about acceleration!!! One of the complaints about an I6 is exhaust sound. Yes, they do have a tenancy to sound "whizzy" at higher RPM's. It's a little more difficult to maintain laminar flow and reduce high frequency resonances - but, it can be done. The Ford I6 doesn't breathe as well as it could. I installed a functional hood scoop (Found a "butchered up" Torino scoop). I've seen air intakes designed through the front; next to the radiator. The stock distributor - just gets the job done. I installed a 1978 Duraspark distributor, changed an advance spring, and modified a Duraspark module to a GM HEI ignition module. I'm 64 and still have a little fun on the street. I'm always blowing off V8's from light-to-to light (or mostly until we catch up to traffic). Quarter mile? That's a different ball game. Ha Ha So, no matter what you do - have fun with it.
i mean wouldnt they have to upgrade their brakes, rear end, transmission, radiator, and a bunch of other small things to put in a v8? i feel that would eventually put the cost way higher for them. of course they are not going to get the same horsepower as a v8 from the inline but beefing it up for a more fun driver doesnt sound bad to me, doesnt sound like they are throwing away money necessarily. do the upgrades and enjoy, but thats just my opinionated suggestion lol
My suggestion. If I want the most out of the setup u plan to stay w/; I wud probably go to a 5spd. trans and something in the realm of 3.55 ring set. Upgrade to front disk, whatever setup I was going with. rthomas771 has a similiar setup but I think he has a 250ci. U might want to check his webpage -- http://1bad6t.com/Maverick/maverick.html
...to,a mild cam, 2 barrel carb set up, ignition and headers when we rebuild the 200 six. this looks like more than "just a rebuild"... file:///C:/Users/User/Downloads/1970%20Maverick%20(2).pdf
Woody dont let this battle of which is best ruin your experience here sorry your first post turned into such a debate, you know what you want to do so just do it. Guys give it a break or start your own thread about it As for The Gathering in Somerset it will probably be July 12th--July 15th, Sat. 15th being the day of the actual show. No actual agenda has been set up as far as I know but you can count on several hours of bs.ing in the parking lot till the wee hours of the morning. The motel we use gives us a discount rate and provides us with fresh baked cookies daily. More on it as it develops
