in the past 2 weeks, ive been gathering some parts for my mavey . Her interior is almost perfect except for the dash, so i managed to score on a perfect OEM dash pad out of a 72 maverick. its used so its not perfect, theres only damage from U.V. sun light on the top portion as shown in the pics, a vinyl paint should make this dash looking pankin brand new. Since my plan is to convert her into a stick shift drive train tranny someday, i have bought some component parts for my swap. heres a clutch pedal assembly out of a comet that had an Inline 6 motor. Ive asked around here in this forum if the v8 maverick/comet shares the same clutch pedal assembly as the Inline 6 maverick/comet, majority of members said that theyre the same but i have to find out my self when i install it to find out if theres no difference. heres a frame side mount, this one came with the clutch pedal assembly as well. i am unsure if this will work for the V8 conversion or if theres any difference between a V8 or I6 motor frame side mount.... hopefully its the same (can someone confirm?). if theyre not the same, id buy a V8 version to replace this one since this looks kinda rough and old already heres a engine ball stud, i got it used but check out the bling bling condition still on it... looks like brand new heres uhhh.... A Z BAR? since this also came with the pedal assembly above from a I-6 motor, perhaps this will not work for my V8 conversion. ==> can someone please confirm this also and post how a V8 Z bar looks like if theyre different from this. Heres a brake light switch i bought from NAPA auto parts for under $16. mine is all messed up in the car because when i apply brake, the brake lights doesnt work, i did the wiring test by putting the 2 wires together and it works so its the switch that needs replacing.
I think ive decided to just replace the existing complete harness because her harness is all molested and brittle. i am in the process of locating her a used but good harness out of another 73 maverick model.
everything will work but the z-bar here is the autokrafters replacement http://www.autokrafters.com/v4/go.g...products&show_product_id=512201&product=24031 the straight 6 one is too long, also the V8 one is actually two pieces. If you have time to spare get the Autokrafters bar the guys say it takes a while to get 1-2 months but it is alot stronger then the original one.
Today, i decided to install my clutch pedal assembly into my mavey . although im not that big, it took me 3 hours and lots of energy to complete the swap due to manuvering with different positions on a very tight space.... maverick looks big inside but not enough space still to work with. In my opinion, when converting a car from automatic to stick shift, the pedals are the very first thing needed to be converted. heres how it looked when everything is in place inside on the front of my 73 maverick. the lower dash portion are still in place, thats the first thing that needs to be taken out. in this picture, the lower dash portion is already out of the way. this way, i could fugure out what next step i must do. since i know that the brake pedal frame has bolts through the fire wall, i unbolted them first. it consist of 4 14mm bolts that must be unbolted around the brake master cylinder. then i dropped the steering column by unbolting the 3 14mm bolts that holds up in place from dash frame. (pics to come, i forgot to take it ) the rod from the brake master and the brake light switch must be disconnected from the pedal assembly. theres a pin that hold the brake master rod, brake light switch, and brake pedal... i disassembled these to free the brake master cylinder rod from the pedal assembly. (pics to come i forgot to take it ) in this picture, i removed 4 bolts that holds the brake pedal frame from the cockpit dash frame. these step are the most easiest way to remove the brake pedal frame out of its place. i discovered this way because if i go the other way, the wiring from the right side might be damaged from removal. heres how it looked when i finally took out the automatic pedal assembly with the frame when my original complete automatic pedal assembly was taken out of my maverick, i compared it to the clutch pedal assembly i bought. i noticed that the pedal frame with the clutch pedal i bought are slightly different to the pedal frame with my automatic pedal that came out of my car... its because maybe my 73 is made differently in shape with the 72 models.... the pedal set i bought came off of a 72 maverick. so i decided to reuse my original pedal frame and swap out all the clutch pedal accessories by disassembling the clutch pedal set i bough. heres are some parts that may be over looked and could be easily be forgoten to take out as well if some people has to use their original brake pedal frame once all the clutch pedal components were swapped to my original brake pedal frame... i just back tracked to the steps i made with my removal steps. whaalaa! my clutch pedal set is completed and installed in my car.
thanks for the compliment fellaz . i still need to figure out where the clutch pedal rod goes through the fire wall as theres no indicator where the hole should be inside the cockpit, but theres a 2 inch diameter round size under the brake master cylinder in the engine bay... is that where i make the hole for the rod and do i have to make the hole 2 inches in diameter as well?
Hey JDM guy - here in 'Murca those 14mm bolts are called 9/16"! Don't be bringin' yer foreign devil metric system 'round here...
thought someone would catch that... I know better to use the right tools but metric tools is what i only have and i could only use whats available to me and it works. gotta do some tool shopping......
I had the same problem when i got my comet. I used to have a triumph spitfire so i had all metric. Not any more though. Lol i have two different tool boxs for each.

Was the Automatic brake pedal held in by a shaft with clip on the end? If so you could have just swapped the pedals in like 5 minutes instead of swapping the entire thing and tearing everything apart. The 6 cylinder frame mount won't work with the V8 zbar ..
