Well you are mixed up sir.
The alternator does not put out more current than the battery. The starter can draw as much as 800 amps. out of a fully charged battery. For that you need to have wire heavy enough to reduce the voltage drops thru the start relay to the starter as the worse case condition.
Drawing power for such things as electric fans that move enough air to be worth while also require low voltage drop from the battery.
A single #4 and preferably a #2 from the battery to the starter relay is enough.
All you need to do is connect from the alternator to the starter relay and not run a wire all the way back to the battery area. There are other ways to cut the alternator off when the safety switch is opened.
When you get into remote cut off switches then you get into other issues.
As far as starting a new thread, your just a lot of fun to watch.
And yes I do mis spell- so what. You got the message.

i run 2/0 wire from the switch to the solenoid and #10 from the switch to the alternator. i,ve run it for 5 years with no problems. this is the way that was reccommended to me by a car builder. btw bluegrass, i don't think the spelling comment was in reference to you, but correct me if i'm wrong the your fun to watch was pretty sarcastic, imo. you got the message.

Bluegrass...I was picking on Rick for spelling "superfluous" correctly...but I can go back and proofread your response for misspellings, if you like :D

I got a little confused on which wire we were talking about...I got it straight now. Still have to swap that one wire out, though.

Thanks for helping to straighten me out. (y)

My alternator didn't work very well and then totally quit due to all the electrical accessories like fan, fuel pump, water pump, MSD ignition etc. I got the jeg's Ford 1-wire alternator and used a #8 gauge wire from the alt to battery. Voltmeter says it works great...no more problems. I got a car stereo amp kit from an autoparts store that had the wire, fuse and connectors.

I have purchased the 10 guage wire to rewire it, just need to find time to get under the car (and not be planting plants, painting doors and shutters, and other "honey-do's"!). :16suspect
