Low charge reading on voltmeter

    OK but it worked fine for what, 38 years??? They're talking about a earth N-S pole reversal but isn't suppose to happen for a few thousand more years... Not that it would have anything to do with your problem... ;)

    Did you check that fuse link???

    I don't know that it has worked fine for all of those 38 years. There's no telling what previous owners have done. There's evidence of tampering and inept repair jobs.

    And no I haven't checked the fuse yet, it's been raining buckets all day. :(

    Well finally, problem solved! After being on the road for business, days of rain, and a few sick days I finally got a chance to work on it.

    New 1 wire alternator from Summit, new battery cables, and bingo, 14 volts on the gauge at idle, pull on the lights and still showing 13 volts at idle.

    So it seems everything's working just fine now and I can finally drive it!
