Manual vs Power Steering Gear Boxes

What do you like better - a manual or power steering gear box?

  1. Keep it all manual - too hard to steer with a power gear box.

  2. Make the switch - the benefits of a tighter ratio are worth the extra effort.

  3. I switched to a power gear box, but wish I had the manual back.

  4. I switched to a power gear box and have really not noticed any extra effort when steering.

I put in a 19:1 Torino box in. Fairlane/Torino/Cyclone from 1966-1970 bolts right it. I beleive it's a power box, but I'm not totally sure.

Anyway it's a little bit in-between the 16:1 Maverick power box and the 22.5:1 manual box I had.

I really like it, definitely harder to steer, and I notice it in slow corners and fast sweepers even. But I prefer the feel.

Even in parking lots it might be harder to turn, but I don't have to turn it 8 times lock-to-lock ;) so I feel like it's a wash.

Charlie, you ought try the 16:1 sometime. I've got more than a few buds that refer to me as Popeye as of late... lol

It really isn't that bad, but I don't think I'll ever parallel park that bad boy again...

Heh, I'm happy to not have to deal with it anymore! ;)

Earl Honda is great, can't say the same about L.A.... at least I spend over half the year on the road so I don't have to deal with it! ;)

I have only driven/rode in 3 mavericks. One was full manual car, other was mine which i've only used to roll around driveways, off trailer, in and out of garage.
Mine is power system minus the pump. It's not that hard to turn it even at dead stop.
I can't tell much difference between mine and rolling around the maverick with no power steering parts at all.
The other maverick was Jim's... (Yellow72mavrick) and I dont know what he had in his, nor was i paying attention.
