Funny you should say that, John - I don't have a drill press but I tried and tried yesterday to come up with a home made quicky guide so I could use the hole saw, in my hand drill, without the pilot bit with no luck - If I could have centered a really small bit in the arbor, that would have worked also but I just gave up due to time constraints
When I core drill I use a wood plank. I have several sizes that I made. Basicly cut the hole out of the wood using the bit then I can lay the board over the spot where I need the hole then I stand on the tail of the plank to hold it in place. You could be done by now if you wern't showing us all this work you been doing. Glad you take the time.
Good idea, Gene - I still have a few areas where a hole saw plug will take care of I should be out in the garage getting closer to being done by now but instead I'm sitting here responding to your responses to my progress posts - BWAWAWAWAWAWAWAW :evilsmile
Actually got 5 1/2 hours of work in on the car today even though I ran out of shielding gas after welding in one plate on the passenger side of the foot box - I did spend the rest of the time cutting and sanding to fit all of the different layers and different thickness of pieces of steel to finish off the passenger side torque box repair - not sure what Ford engineer thought up this jigsaw puzzle to hold these cars together - finished off the day fitting a new piece of steel to the "clean out" door I had cut into the side of the torque box while the rocker was still off the car - good thing I cut out that slot since a lot of those little steel pieces fell in the torque box over and over again while fitting them - all of the steel pieces are taped in place with electrical tape waiting for me to get welding gas
Happy Holidays, Sir, this thing looks to be coming along great, can't wait to see the continued progress, I have been on here every now and then I will try to get on more often. I see things you are doing to your car, I was thinking of doing to mine before I got carried away, I am glad I started with a california car, (bought in 1996) I hate to think what the winters in the midwest are going to do to them, but hey that is why we do the things we do ... right?
Thank you for the positive comments on my project - I really hope to get more done soon but I don't have central heat in my garage and can only do so much with a kerosene heater in the depths of the winter - a lot of my current work involves many areas of the car that I sure wish were parts on a California car PS: your user name MAVFREAK says it all
Got me a new cylinder of welding gas today and a warm spell is approaching so I hope to get some more work done on the car this coming weekend
I would be honored to have to take a look at my little project, Thomas You will have to give me the details of your scheduled spare time while in Pennsylvania beforehand and that will give me time to clean up around it so you can actually "see" it
From a week ago Got the kerosene heater stoked up and, with a new tank of Argon mix, I was able to finish up all of the repairs on the right front torque box and the last of the passenger side floorboard damage - It was interesting dealing with the different thickness of steel layers - kept having to change the welder settings to keep from burning through - also welded in the access hole I had cut into the torque box from the inside of the rocker to coat the inside with encapsulator - good thing I did because all of those small patch pieces kept falling into the torque box until I got them tacked into place - the photos are a little out of focus due to me having to use my cell phone until I get me a new camera
