On two Maverick C-Pillars I've noticed wavy surface on my original '74 (non Grabber) 2 dr and another 74 (true) Grabber. Also my 74 looks like may have filler on top A Pillar into roof and cracks under paint.. Anybody take their car to bare steel ?. Curious about how the roof - body seam along C-Pillar is smoothed at factory. Earlier Fords' used lead filler in those spots. Still lead or maybe early plastic filler is revealing age ?. Just Curious ... have fun # 80 sander steel panel prep runs into much softer lead filler and digs in (61 Comet) :
The leaded seam on the pillars are allways wavy. If its cracking and original... rust has gotten under the lead...
Yes lead up to the last day of production. Reason being, a better product IE: Polyester fillers/adhesives, had not yet been invented. Lead, could handle the stress of flexing and temp change that old school fillers could not.
So when was the end of lead use by Ford and others. My original post questioned the early fillers used. have fun
Generally...Mid to late 8os' Each manufacturer was different. and they all tried to sidestep the osha regs that were coming down the pipe banning lead fillers for production use...
Here is a picture from my '70 showing where the lead line is. The body was media blasted down to bare metal.
Thanks Acornridgeman ... that's what I was looking for. Shows the lead filled roof seam exactly where I've seen reveals, have fun
